Northern Vancouver Island
Published: July 28th 2012North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver Island » ParksvillePlans, plans, plans. The best ones, as they say, often don't turn out properly. I had thought to check out the whale watching opportunities in Campbell River. I had also chatted with the lady who ran the campground there and she had suggested that I could go and see the local museum. But when I got up and started in to town to do those things, I came upon Elk Falls Provincial Park. And I wanted to see the falls. So I headed in there and then did the little walk to the viewpoint. But the viewpoint was oriented in such a way that it wasn't all that impressive. I went back to the parking lot and I was going to head on in to town, but then I saw another trail. I felt like the ... read more
The Horne Lake Caves
Published: July 21st 2012North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver Island » ParksvilleDuring the night I spent at Qualicum Bay, I was online and showing my photo of the bald eagle from Pacific Rim area. I ended up being contacted by someone I used to work with in the casino. She invited me to come and visit, but I didn't have any contact information for them. I left her a message to let me know. By the morning, I hadn't heard anything, but I decided to give her some time to get in touch. That meant I was going to need something to keep me occupied for a while as I waited. Nearby Qualicum Bay is a place called Horne Lake Provincial Park. There are caves there and so I decided to go and have a look. When I arrived, I found there were three caves in the ... read more
The Spirit of the Spheres
In With the Tide, Out with the Old
Published: June 16th 2011North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver Island » ParksvilleAs the day ends we watch the tide slowly wash away the products of the day - sand castles melting away under the persistent rising water, removing away all residue and reminders of the days activities. It's the perfect metaphor. Awakening to a new day, a new beach and a new start. Rathrevor Beach Provincial Park is incredible; I would have never imagined that such an endless expanse of sandy beach existed anywhere this far north along the west coast. The shallow shelf allow what feels like miles of exposed shoreline to appear every day as the water recedes. It was an entirely unplanned stop. The original 'plan' was to leave Point-no-Point and zig-zag a path across the island out to Tofino, but Andras spotted a one-page article on Rathrevor in one of the magazines at ... read more
Vancouver Island and Science world
Published: June 24th 2010North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver Island » ParksvilleHey everyone!! Guess you have been waiting for a blog for sometime now hey? I really thought I would have all this spare time but truth is any spare time I get, I run from the computer. : ) Things have been good, hectic and crazy. Life is unpredictable and this holiday has been a testament to that. The one thing that has stayed consistent is the fact that my mom is finally following me home. I am so excited. Elated in fact, that after 8 long years she will see where we live and the beautiful country we call home. It will make sense all I have been rambling on about the last 8 years. I must say there has been a delay in this blog, as we have tried to relax, enjoy blah, blah, ... read more

Beyond the (Pacific) Rim...
Published: May 19th 2010North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver Island » ParksvilleSince I last blogged (is that an acceptable verb?), I've been across the Island to the Pacific Rim National Park and back. I left Nanaimo on Friday and headed west towards Port Alberni. Quick stops on the way at Little Qualicum Falls (great place) and Cathedral Grove (lots of big trees - it was about as exciting as it sounds). Very twisty roads, but I'm getting used to the driving the van now. Port Alberni itself is technically a sea port, but is about 30 miles inland. It sits at the head of a long narrow inlet. Quite a nice, if somewhat functional, little town: and yet another one with a great big industrial plant in the middle of it. The snow-capped mountains surrounding the town made up for its shortcomings - as did the fantastic ... read more
We spy ocean!
Published: September 24th 2008North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver Island » ParksvilleSharon: Can't believe we made it here! Last update, we were sitting in Scott's hotel in Kamloops, tired and sore (I'm pretty sure the injuries on my bottom are what most people would call "saddle sores") and completely oblivious to the mountain ranges we were going to be confronting the next day. And I thought the Rockies were the force to be dealt with! We started off day 11 by pushing our bikes up the formidable hill that makes up the other side of the valley in Kamloops - it only took us, say, maybe 3 hours! Ugh. Whoever commented that we were going to have massive leg muscles but no arm muscles to mention after such a long bike trip should really try pushing a rather heavy bike loaded with close to 100 pounds of ... read more

Published: May 12th 2009North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver Island » ParksvilleScott’s parent’s, Bob and Pat, live in a place called Parksville on Vancouver Island and invited us to stay. We were looking forward to some nice lodgings after our horror hotel in Victoria so caught the bus North. Bob and Pat’s place was definitely the opposite end of the scale from the Victoria hotel. They live in a relatively new area near the coast. We dropped our bags off and headed down to the pool as soon as we got there. Once recharged we took Cecil (Bob and Pat’s dog) for a walk down to the beach. He is a strange one, once at the beach he was trying to eat shells. We watched an eagle soaring above us and on the way back to the house saw its hug nest which must have been more ... read more
