We start the day with an awesome breakfast at the Hotel Restaurant - served by our Aussie friend we met last time through. It’s a cool morning, and we decide that a small walk up Maligne Canyon would be a good idea to get our circulation working before the trip. A beautiful spot with clear green water, a swing bridge, and good track to stretch our legs on. Then its off again in the purple pearl, along at first the same trail as the train took down the Yellowhead highway, then past Mount Robson where we stopped for lunch. Some of the frozen lakes we passed when on the train are now melted to slush - only two weeks later.
We stop at the half way point at a town called McBride for a break. A cute railway station/craft shop was the main attraction there, and the biting cold was also memorable! The town was also home to the last petrol station for 200kms… a point we should have taken more seriously! Shortly after we left we discussed this point, we were half full and decided that ‘she’ll be right!’ Enjoying a
Maligne
Keep me warm! good deal of viewing bears along the way and nervously calculating our tank capacity in relation to consumption rate - we came to the scientific conclusion that we were #@&$ed! The gas tank was now on E and we still had about 60km to go...
We resorted to driving at speeds a snail would be proud of and coasting down any hills- whilst cars passing gave us some questioning looks and speeding off into the distance - awaiting the sputtering sounds of death to rattle from the fuel tank. But wait! There! On the not too distant horizon! We spot a petrol station on the very outskirts of Prince George! We were all cheering - pleased to have dodged the bullet of an embarrassing phone call to the AA 10 kms from town!
Into Prince George for a couple of nights to the strangest hotel so far. Esthers Inn was like a ’Fantasy Island’ copy. Fully enclosed by an oval of Rooms was tropical gardens and heated swimming pools. There was a poolside thatched roof restaurant, waterfalls and hot tubs. The boys loved it! We generally stayed in the hotel complex all day and swam and did some journal
on the road
Yet another bloody mountain shot entries - it was about 4oC outside, so the ‘oasis’ was a good place to be!
Off again on Thursday heading towards Terrace - with an overnight stay in Burns Lake. Much more like NZ farmland than other places we have seen. There is also HUGE sawmills with ginourmous stacks of wood outside. Good bear spotting country too. We also decide that the BIG piles of Poo on the side of the roads must be from bear. Would hate to think there was something else around that big… There is supposed to be Moose around too, but a local tells me that they have been pretty much hunted out in the area. Quite sad really.
Terrace is a good sized town, with lots of shops etc. We visit the fishing shop where they are really helpful with information and the low down on the local scene. Then we head out to Lake Else where we have booked into a cabin at the Waterlily Bay resort. Wow! What a terrific spot! Sixty acres of lake side property that has been handed down through a family - starting with a rich Englishwoman with a lust for trout fishing in the
1920’s. Her grandson runs it now, and he is getting on and we think they have no kids to pass it on to. So its up for sale for 6 million! Bargain.
We stay in one of the best cabins we have ever stayed in, with everything you could want, in a beautiful spot and no TV… Bliss! It was also fairly good price at $100 a night for cabin with 2 seperate bedrooms, kitchen living room etc. Boys spend all day fishing (tangling lines!) and playing around the place. . Mothers day on Sunday, so I get breakfast in bed, and day trip down to Kitimat for a bit of a fish, and we go to Dairy Queen for lunch. Lovely day!
Campfires at night with the compulsory marshmellows cap it all off for a lovely stay for three nights. Could have stayed there for a lot longer… Anyone got Six Million to spare?
