Yellowhead Highway

Cisca writes the blog this time for a change. From Stewart we went to Smithers. First we took a boardwalk over the estuary. On the way back we saw the gletchers again, quite impressive. The weather was'nt really cooperating but later on the sky cleared up. To be clear on that point Brenda, we did not took the sun with us. We have absolutely no clue where it is. On the way to Smithers we visited the Ksan Historical Village and Museum in Hazelton. We did a guided tour, it was interesting to hear about the culture and heritage of the Ksan First Nations Clan. De guide appeared to be the new chief in training of this band. She is still very young and still has much to learn about leadership. Now her great uncle is still the chief and her uncle and her ant are now the wing chiefs, a sort of temporary replacement if she is not ready yet to take the position of chief. In Smithers we stopped at the local visitor information centre (VIC) to look for a budget B&B but of course it was closed. Fortunately in the window a number of local B&Bs listed, very convenient. We ended up at the Silvern Lake Trail B&B, which is recommend highly. The lady of the house came originally from Koln in Germany and she was very nice. We had a big room and shared a sitting room with another Dutch couple. It seems that we stumble up on Dutch travellers all the time. They gave us useful information on B&Bs they had been to. They travelled exactly our route but the other way round. We had a fun evening with them. Looking back at our trip so far, the absolute low point was Terrace, we decided not to stay in a motel for the time being.
Today we had an early start heading in the direction of Prince George, the weather had a really Dutch character, it rained all day. The route was really boring, in fact it was so boring that we got giggling. The highlights of todays travel were the stops at the rest rooms. The scenery looked a bit like Limburg as it was a bit hilly but not steep and in other parts it was just plain flat. Since Prince Rupert we have already driven 1400 km. We put on some corny Dutch music and sang along.
Again we saw big stretches of wood. We were shocked to see so many spruce trees dead. Big patches on slopes were brown, it was horrendous to see this. This is caused by a beetle. Normally this beetle is frozen to death by the severe cold in the winters so there are not many left to cause damage. Due to the global heating a massive number of beetles stay alive and they feast on the spruce trees. The consequence is that big parts of woods are now as dead as dodo. This is something to think about and we ourselves are with this travel not exactly contribute in a positive manner to the climate problem. Hmmmm.
So far for the eduction. We did not linger in Prince George but drove on after getting some information in the VIC on accomodations to stay in the Rockies. It was still raining so we figured it would best to travel as far as we could. We traveled until McBride and found a nice B&B. It is a sort of farm run by an older jovial couple. It is the Scarecrow Farm B&B. They have 2 dogs and a cat. We are allowed everywhere in their home and there is even a hot tub at our disposal! They apologized that they couldn't offer us dinner. The other guests are from Ontario. If they only had known a little bit earlier of our arrival we could have joined them. This is another great place to stay. This B&B is a must for everybody looking for a place in this area.


Ik neem een keer het schrijven van de Blog over van Ton. Vanuit Stewart zijn we, na een wandeling op de boardwalk over de estuary, vertrokken richting Smithers. Dus de hele weg langs de gletchers weer terug. Het weer zat niet mee al klaarde het later wat op. Nee Brenda, we namen de zon niet mee. Geen idee waar die gebleven is. Onderweg bezochten we Ksan Historical Village and museum bij Hazelton. Daar hebben we de rondleiding gedaan, erg leuk om van alles te horen en zien over de cultuur van de Ksan First Nations. De gids bleek de toekomstige nieuwe Chief van deze stam te zijn. Een nog jong meisje dat volgens ons nog heel wat een leiders kwaliteiten te leren heeft. Nu is haar oud oom nog Chief en zijn haar oom en tante wingchiefs een soort tijdelijke opvolgers als zij er nog niet klaar voor zou zijn. Daarna in Smithers gekeken bij het visitors information centre voor B&B's. Natuurlijk waren we er te laat en was het gesloten, maar er hing een lijst dus dat was handig. We zijn beland bij Silvern Lake Trail B&B, een echte aanrader, aardige mevrouw van Keulse afkomst en prima kamer. We ontmoeten daar een ander Nederlands echtpaar, echt je stuikelt er hier over, waarvan we allerlei nuttige info kregen over B&B's onderweg. Zij reden onze route omgekeerd. We hadden een gezellige avond met hen. Terugkijkend was de overnachting in Terrace echt een dieptepunt. We willen niet meer in een motel hebben we besloten.
Vandaag zijn we vroeg vertrokken richting Prince George. Het weer was echt heel hollands, het heeft de hele dag geregend. De route was werkelijk te saai voor woorden, we kregen er gewoon de slappe lach van. De hoogte punten waren de sanitaire stops. Kun je nagaan. Gedeeltelijk zag het eruit als Limburg wat glooiend en verder vlak, en daarvoor hadden we toch al 1400 km onder wielen zitten. We hebben maar melige nederlandse muziek opgezet en heel hard meegezongen.
En weer waren er heel veel bossen. Wat we welkelijk schokkend vonden was dat er zo ontzettend veel naaldbomen dood waren. Werkelijk hele hellingen waren bruin gekleurd. Vreselijk om te zien. Dit wordt veroorzaakt door een kever. Normaal vriezen die in de winter dood en veroorzaken dus niet al te veel schade. Door de opwarming van de aarde gebeurt dit dus niet meer. Met als gevolg dat hele bossen afsterven. Wel iets om over na te denken. En wij leveren met onze reis nou niet echt een positieve bijdrage aan het klimaatsprobleem. Hmmmm.
Tot zover de educatie. We zijn Prince George snel voorbij gereden na in het VIC wat info gehaald te hebben over overnachtingsmogelijkheden in de Rockies. Het regende toch dus dan kun je beter reizen, wandelen kan dan toch niet. We zijn dus verder gereden tot McBride waar we in een werkelijk enorm leuke B&B zitten. Een boerderij met een ouder joviaal echtpaar. De Scarecrew Farm B&B. Er zijn 2 honden en een kat. We mogen overal in huis komen, er is een hottub. We zitten gewoon bij hen in de huiskamer. Ze verontschuldigden zich zelfs dat ze ons geen avondeten aan konden bieden. Er is ook een echtpaar uit Ontario. Als ze eerder geweten hadden dat we kwamen konden we mee-eten. Geweldig toch!!! Een echte aanrader!
