Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Jericho Beach

Jericho Beach Youth Hostel
Once part of a Canadian Army base - apparently there were submarines in English Bay (which laps the shores of Jericho Beach) during the Second World War, and possibly beyond.

After disembarking all four of us took a taxi to the Jericho Beach Youth Hostel where Kev & I were staying two nights and Martha & Becky one. We gained a different perspective of Vancouver from Jericho Beach - all four of us loved it. It certainly was different from the Central Youth Hostel we'd stayed at prior to joining the Alaskan cruise ship. Ross (and I'm not sure how many friends) apparently spent some time living in a campervan at Jericho Beach - I can see the attraction. aren't i horrible!! it's been nearly three weeks since i've been home, and i haven't kept up in here! The lovely trip is over, and my bank account's still at zero, so it's time to save! I'm on my way on October 23rd, and finally then i will be able to tell you exciting things! My flight lands in Sydney at 6:30 am on the 25th, their time, and then i'm on an adventure to find my friends who will already be in Oz. Welcome to Hope

Hope. Billed as “A Day Trippers Paradise”. Our Highlights were Mud’s Internet Café, very cool, cheap internet, live music and good coffee. The Othello Tunnels. And something some of you may have come across before but we certainly haven’t, a “Smorgasbord”!! Hope has been the setting for quite a few movies I won‘t bore you with the names. Way to Yoho Natl Park - reentering the Rockies

Having spent an extra day in calgary we had 5 days in which to make our way back to Vancouver. The stops came thick and fast starting with Yoho National Park. The word "Yoho" is a Cree Native American expression of 'Awe & Wonder' and after visiting the Emerald Lake, Natural Bridge and Takakkaw Falls you could see why they chose the word. I'm still at home, awaiting the day i can leave... I did the most brave thing ever and finally bought the ticket to Oz! unbelievable that I'm going....a year ago this was most certainly not part of my plans. I'm writing because although i'm going to be leaving to see a beautiful country, I wanted to share some pictures of my beautiful country! Meditation in Merritt

Dhamma Surabhi Meditation Centre

After our indulgent Rockies expedition, we spent the next 10 days leading a very simple, soulful and silent life, at the Vipassana Meditation Centre in Merritt. Liam has done this meditation course quite a few times and practices regularly, but for me, this was a first. It was a very unusual experience and one I welcomed with an open mind. Getting Antsy ... Leaving in 5 months!

Still At Home The weather is finally getting warm, which is good, or i'd hop on a plane ASAP! I'm planning a trip for September of this year to Australia, New Zealand, and who knows where else. I'm travelling alone for the most part, so if i find a friend along the way (and it sounds like it's easy to do in oz) then maybe i'll head to thailand and some such places.
