Hope Travel Blogs

Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Jericho Beach Youth Hostel
Jericho Beach Youth Hostel
Once part of a Canadian Army base - apparently there were submarines in English Bay (which laps the shores of Jericho Beach) during the Second World War, and possibly beyond.
After disembarking all four of us took a taxi to the Jericho Beach Youth Hostel where Kev & I were staying two nights and Martha & Becky one. We gained a different perspective of Vancouver from Jericho Beach - all four of us loved it. It certainly was different from the Central Youth Hostel we'd stayed at prior to joining the Alaskan cruise ship. Ross (and I'm not sure how many friends) apparently spent some time living in a campervan at Jericho Beach - I can see the attraction. Maybe you can tell us some of your Jericho Beach stories Ross??!! [View Full Entry]

Hope. Billed as “A Day Trippers Paradise”. Our Highlights were Mud’s Internet Café, very cool, cheap internet, live music and good coffee. The Othello Tunnels. And something some of you may have come across before but we certainly haven’t, a “Smorgasbord”!! Hope has been the setting for quite a few movies I won‘t bore you with the names. But clearly the most famous one (well in my eyes) was Rambo “First Blood” where Sylvester Stallone jumped from a Canyon wall to escape capture, cutting his shoulder open on the way down through the trees [View Full Entry]

Road to Hope

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Hope
Having spent an extra day in calgary we had 5 days in which to make our way back to Vancouver. The stops came thick and fast starting with Yoho National Park. The word "Yoho" is a Cree Native American expression of 'Awe & Wonder' and after visiting the Emerald Lake, Natural Bridge and Takakkaw Falls you could see why they chose the word. Having made good time we pushed on and instead of doing a night stop in Golden (looked a bit uninspiring) we headed for Revelstoke. On route we passed through the Glacier National Park home to over 400 Glaciers, [View Full Entry]

I'm still at home, awaiting the day i can leave... I did the most brave thing ever and finally bought the ticket to Oz! unbelievable that I'm going....a year ago this was most certainly not part of my plans. I'm writing because although i'm going to be leaving to see a beautiful country, I wanted to share some pictures of my beautiful country! I was recently in the Shuswap, just north of Scotch creek, and despite the usual wet BC weather, it was a nice view from the campsite! [View Full Entry]

Motorhome News from North America 11. 2nd May - 13th May 2006 Canada, Oh,Canada ‘Splendor Sine Oceasu’, British Columbia’s motto on its coat of arms, has much to live up to. ‘Beauty without End’ will be our yardstick through the next few weeks as we journey eastwards from Vancouver Island across the Strait of Georgia to Vancouver and on through the Rockies to Calgary. It might take us a while. BC is Big. It is big enough to fit California, Oregon - and Washington inside and still have room to spare! And, it is truly beautiful. After our indulgent Rockies expedition, we spent the next 10 days leading a very simple, soulful and silent life, at the Vipassana Meditation Centre in Merritt. Liam has done this meditation course quite a few times and practices regularly, but for me, this was a first. It was a very unusual experience and one I welcomed with an open mind. I wont go through each day as they have somewhat blurred into one with the rigorous routine and I doubt that your stamina will permit a detailed account (no, no really, I understand). I have melded my experiences into one with [View Full Entry]

Still At Home The weather is finally getting warm, which is good, or i'd hop on a plane ASAP! I'm planning a trip for September of this year to Australia, New Zealand, and who knows where else. I'm travelling alone for the most part, so if i find a friend along the way (and it sounds like it's easy to do in oz) then maybe i'll head to thailand and some such places. But until then, I'll be saving the cash to get to oz in the first place, and visiting with my jealous friends who apparently can't take time out [View Full Entry]
