Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Yo Ho Ho! Hurray for Yoho - National Park! Thurs Sept 10-Fri Sept 11: Though we began our stay at Yoho with another early night, listening to the rain on the roof of the van, the next morning was magic as the mist rose off the surrounding mountains and we saw what a stunning place we were in. Looking up we saw rugged mountains all around us, including Cathedral Peaks and also a glacier just above our very site! At Yoho we first encountered the “bare campsite” policy. We were instructed by the ranger at the entry gate that we mustn’t [View Full Entry]

The past few days we've been cut off from civilization. No internet. So here is an update what we've been doing since the arrival in the Kiska Inn B&B in Dead Man's Flats. Banff and around was on our todo list. The first thing we did was to take the gondola up sulphur mountain (2281m) which gives a nice view on Banff and on several other summits of mountains. The upper terminal looks like something from an old James Bond movie (quote Lonely Planet) and has the expected restaurant with awful coffee. I made a panorama photo using my tripod and [View Full Entry]

We did a serious hike at Lake Louise in Banff national park. The lady at the information centre thought that we looked tough and proposed to us a nice but long hike. Actually it was a combination of two hikes. We began by walking to the tea house at Lake Agnes, this was a steep climb with an elevation gain of 385m. We had tea with scones and continued with a side trip to a rock (Big Beehive) with an additional elevation gain of 135m. Then we went down an esimated 400m and went up again 250m to the second tea [View Full Entry]

Today we drove to Golden, BC, Canada and especially to Michelle Rogers. But it wasn’t going to be a seamless drive, since it was on our way we had decided to go see Glacier National Park. From Great Falls we drove through Montana to the top, right near the border. The drive was slow, the road was iced over and covered by snow. We would love to tell you how lovely Glacier National Park was but unfortunately we got stuck about 10 metres from the entrance gate. You ask how we got stuck; we got hung up in the snow, all [View Full Entry]

Hiking in the Canadian Rockies has long been a favourite past-time and we magaged several hikes this summer and fall. On Wednesday we joined the Dogtooth Hikers from Golden for a hike up the Beahive behind Lake Louise. The weather was marvelous and much to our delight the Agnes teahouse had not yet closed for the season. We could not resist having a large pot of Earl Grey tea and 2 cookies at a cost us $16. Here are pictures from some of our summer hiking. [View Full Entry]

All I have to say about our journey to and from Golden is: greyhound buses attract the weirdest people!! Saying that, the scenary was amazing. We arrived in Golden (well on the highway where the bus left us) and were immediately awestruck about how amazing the area was. The town is situated next to a river with a slightly torquise colour surrounded by snow capped mountains which are covered in thick pine forests. I could not believe that this was so close to how I pictured Canada to be. After the awe inspiring feelings had worn off and we had checked [View Full Entry]

For all you concerned photographers, I took my camera memory chips into the local computer wiz who was able to recover all my pictures of Egypt that I thought I had lost by picking up a virus in an internet cafe. I finally got out of vancouver late on friday arriving in 100 Mile House later that evening. The canyon was breathtaking to view during my evening drive and super hot in around Lytton even though it was late. Very little traffic as well made it even more enjoyable. It was so sweet seeing Alex at Educo(camp) and all his adventures from the week provided many hours of conversation. Thanks to family we got all Alex's laundry done and made it out on the road by 3:30pm on Sunday. We were sad to leave as we were having such a good [View Full Entry]
