Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Edmonton is around the same size as Adelaide back in Australia. Except that its river has much more water than the Torrens! It also has what was the world's biggest shopping centre, the West Edmonton Mall. On what started out as a rainy day, we happily spent a day wondering around the mall, fulfilling one of Darrren's childhood dreams. Only problem is we didn't feel youthful enough to ride its rollercoasters, play mini golf, skate its rink etc. But we got to relive our time in LA 15 years ago, when we went to Tony Romas. We generally try to avoid [View Full Entry]

A Day in Banff North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff
We spent the day walking around Banff today. The town reminds us of Estes, CO at Rocky Mountain National Park. Lots of cool shops with gems, t-shirts, souveniers, and outdoor type stuff. We also went to the Buffalo Nations Luxton Museum which shows the history of the First Nations peoples of the Canadian Rockies and Northern Plains. We saw tepees, sled dog exhibits, hunting exhibits, and all types of artifacts showing what life was like in the late 1800s and early 1900s. And of course we ended the day with a swim in the hotel pool. [View Full Entry]

Every time I come back to Calgary, I am pleasantly surprised by the changes I find it to have undergone during my absence. New clubs, new shops, new restaurants, new buildings are springing up at an impressive rate in spite the recession rhetoric being floated about. Opportunities for enjoyment and employment abound for anyone willing to seek them out, and I have found a perfect mix of both since my last entry. Lucky for me, while the city has changed, my network of friends has largely stayed the same, which has meant plenty of people to hook me up and help [View Full Entry]

Lake Louise
La vallee de la Bow
La valle de la Bow

Boys started off the day with a swim at the pool at the hotel this morning at Lake Louise. After breakfast we decided to take another go at canoeing around the lake. It was raining so a bit more of an adventure today. We were nearly at the other side of the lake toward the glacier when we heard what sounded like thunder. We wondered if we should turn back because the clouds were so dark. It happened again and believe it or not the sound was coming from an avalanche down the mountain. Spent most of the afternoon inside the [View Full Entry]
