Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

August 17 Calgary Say goodbye to the Hall family and are driven to the airport by Elaine. Our first flight is to Chicago and we have to renew our US visa even though we are not going out of the airport. Contarary to popular rumour this proves to be a piece of cake. Flight on time and uvneventful apart from it being the smallest plane we have travelled on so far.. Try to retrieve our bags at O'Hare but they have been transferred to our next flight, brilliant. Amuse ourselves by window shopping and eating and drinking for several hours at [View Full Entry]

As we left on the transcontinental train, panicked travellers on Air France were probably walking away from a burning fuselage. Sources say that the craft skipped down the runway before landing in a ravine near the Toronto International Airport. People on the train whispered the news as if they were spreading gossip. “Did you hear what happened this morning?” In the closed quarters of a moving train, nobody really knew what happened. Some thought that terrorists triggered the accident. Others blamed the fog, the rain, and the bolts of lightning that swept through the region. Sk [View Full Entry]

I should let everyone know that I am back in Calgary. I still have many stories from my trip; so, I will continue updating this blog until I have finished retelling everything. In my last entry, I mentioned a visit with Grandma Wilson in Kingston, Ontario. It was a short trip. I arrived on Saturday, July 30, and left early in the morning for Vancouver on Tuesday, August 2. Over the weekend, Grandma was able to organize a trolley tour around the city - from Fort Henry to one of John A. MacDonald’s residences. We also invited Aki for an evening [View Full Entry]

"Silence is the true friend that never betrays" -Confucius August 14, 2005, Sunday. We were off to Banff today, a bit of a yuppy town and very built up. Banff was established in 1885, as Canada’s first National Park, and covers 2,564 miles. We walked through the town and stopped at some of the outdoor shops. Did some food shopping and took the Bow Valley Parkway back to Lake Louise, somewhat more scenic and definitely a “Bob Road”. August 15, 2005, Monday. Today is our day to walk on a glacier! We drove back to the Columbia Ice Field. As [View Full Entry]

For a bachelor party for our good friend, 10 of us took the future-groom to Kananaskis and Banff. Before we got the trip going, the boys headed for a good 9-holes at a beautiful golf course just outside of Calgary. Our first stop was in Kananaskis country, 45 mins North-West of Calgary, Alberta. We went white water rafting, which was absolutely amazing. Just being there with our close friends (with no girls to nag us, of course :P ) was unimaginable. The rafting was great, but what made the day was the cliff diving into freezing cold glacier water. The first [View Full Entry]

"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." ---Albert Einstein August 13, 2005, Saturday. Today we planned a hike and hike we did. The trails do not have switchbacks, so one is climbing up, up and up at a straight angle. The teahouse at Lake Louise is one of the most popular hike in the Rockies. After Niagara Falls, this is the most popular tourist attraction in Canada; the trail climbs through the forest to a couple of teal blue subalpine lakes. They are pristine [View Full Entry]

random in banff North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff
Hey guys. So the idea of me staying in one place for more than a few days on a road trip seemed so ridiculous that i randomly ended up in banff two days ago. Val ended up in edmonton half way through the trip and was heading to whistler the next day, so of course we had to come to banff on the way through. That night i took her to every bar in town. Matt wood kindly hooked us up when we were in need of a place to rest our drunken selves.....the next day i took val on a [View Full Entry]

I said the blog from Vancouver was the last one BUT then we saw some wonderful parts of Canada that I thought you might all be interested in seeing and hearing about. Col has also promised everyone he has seen since we came back that there would be a round up or as he said the “best of the best” of the photo’s we took. So here goes… we left you in Vancouver just after the voyage. At that time we were both down with the flu caught on board (a little side effect of cruise trips they never mention in [View Full Entry]

Meet the Vredenburgs: Harrie and Jen head up the Vredenburg clan and run a small "Travellers' fitness school", which caters exclusively to relatives who come to stay. After a nice family meal, which we later discovered was to ensure we had the necessary energy, they kindly took us hiking up Nihahi Ridge. To our joy, we discovered this was only the first of many adventures and healthy activities we joined them on. Their daughter Vanessa is spending her summer taking kids hiking / camping / canoeing in and around Banff national park for a big summer school. Even tho [View Full Entry]
