Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Christmas was all about improvisation and eating! Despite the fact that the snow was melting and our hopes of a white Christmas with it, we set about having a memorable Christmas. In the morning of Christmas Eve, we went into the town to buy everything we needed. That included sneaking around town, trying to buy presents for each other without being seen, a difficult task in a town the size of Jasper! We headed home to start cooking. We were determined to have a christmas tree of sorts and Quin set out to find one. He went down the street and [View Full Entry]

Cross-Country Skiing North America » Canada » Alberta » Jasper
We headed off down Maligne Lake Road to cross-country ski at Moose Lake. Cross-country skiing is heaps of fun! You slide your feet along in tracks to move across flats and up hills and then you hold on for dear life when skiing down the other side! When going up steep hills, you have to walk with your skis pointing out and try to avoid slipping backwards. We fell over many times and there were many funny incidents where one of us careened off and landed in a heap! When we came to our first big hill, Quin went first. He [View Full Entry]

Winter at its best North America » Canada » Alberta » Jasper
Our first day in Jasper was absolutely amazing. We drove out of town to Pyramid Lake where we went for a walk across the frozen lake! It was just amazing to be walking across a frozen lake but a bit disconcerting when the ice groaned! After getting over our fear of falling in, we started playing in the snow that covered the ice. We made snow angels and slid around, just like we were kids again. Snow has that effect! Next we started to build a snowman. The snow is light and easily compacts. Before we knew it, our snowman was [View Full Entry]

Fantastic Calgary North America » Canada » Alberta » Calgary
After 1 and a half days in Edmonton, the next stop of my trip is Calgary, the largest city in the province of Alberta. When the Greyhound bus approaches Downtown Calgary, I was awed by the wealth and prosperity of the city. Gleaming skyscrapers, linked with skybridges, lined the tidy streets. The sky was clear and cloudless, but I just found the weather a bit too cold for me. When I was checking in at the hostel, I was asked to pay the fee (which I thought I had paid with my mum's credit card). As the same case in Edmonton, [View Full Entry]

Finally I have started my 2-week North American trip. The first stop of my trip is Edmonton, the provincial capital of Alberta. On Friday, I reached the Pacific Central Station in Vancouver and I exchanged the proof of purchase of the Greyhound Discovery Pass for the actual pass. With this Greyhound pass, I can take an unlimited number of bus rides within Westcoast America within 21 days. The journey didn't start as smooth as I expected. Firstly, the Greyhound bus from Vancouver to Edmonton was late... Very late in fact... This was because there was too much people going to board [View Full Entry]

Back Home... North America » Canada » Alberta » Calgary
Aren't I unpleasantly surprised to see the weather has turned for the worst, and it's -20°C out here. I guess considering the weather that I have seen in Spain, France and Germany, it's not too much of a shock. Let's see, I wandered around Frankfurt for a couple hours getting on trains with directions Hauptewachte and that type of thing... It was kind of freaky walking around and not knowing hardly any German except for Gudentag and Danke but I managed to buy some chocolates and weird euro shoes and I was on my way home. I never made it to [View Full Entry]

The final countdown has begun. In only 3 days until I will be on the beaches of Ecuador and winter jackets and mittens will be a distant memory. Now is the big push to finish packing, attempt to ensure that I have all of the necessities and say my final goodbyes. Things have been, and will continue to be crazy, but it will all be worth it when I am enjoying the sun and surf and get news of that back home is 40 below! [View Full Entry]
