Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Heading to Jasper North America » Canada » Alberta » Jasper
Today we left Banff and headed towards Jasper, approximately 200 km north. The drive is along a beautiful but sometimes treacherous road called the Icefield Parkway. It passes a number of glaciers which you can stop and view and at one spot you can even touch the toe of the glacier. In winter, this is a bit hard because everything is white and icy. You wouldn’t know where the snow finished and the glacier started! Also it we had limited daylight hours to make the drive and it was snowing on the way there. With snow falling along such a road, [View Full Entry]

Eerste colleges North America » Canada » Alberta » Calgary
Vandaag eerste colleges gehad. Kleine klas, goede docent, leuk onderwerp.

Sunday we spent the day hiking around Sundance Canyon and Moose Marsh. The scenery was truly spectacular with the Rocky Mountains all around us. We walked about 3kms to the Canyon and then did the 2km hike up and around the Canyon. On the way back, we saw a cute little squirrel sitting on a mound of nut shells. He would run down to where his nuts were buried, dig one up and run back onto the mound where he would shell the nut and eat it. Sssooo Cute! Finally, we circled around the marsh. The whole time we were looking [View Full Entry]

Adam Hiking

With Adam safely here and recuperated, we hired a car and headed off to the Rockies. We were meant to get a small car but ended up with a V6 Chrysler. Very Nice!!! Also good because we have tons of stuff. We drove for 2 days to get to Banff, staying overnight in Revelstoke. On our way through to Banff, we stopped in at Lake Louise to drop in on Trevor Campbell, and old friend from Berowra. He happened to be working on the front desk when we rocked up and he was suprised to say the least! After a quick [View Full Entry]

How did that happen? Time is going so quickly here that I think I will be 85 before I know it... I thought I should update this blog for you all as it has been a while! I think that last time I updated it I had just started working here, apologies for being so slack! Working at the hostel is pretty good. I'm getting to meet a load of new people which is cool. Most of them are Australians. In fact I think that there are more Australians here than I will meet when I actually get to their home [View Full Entry]

Even kleine toevoeging: het tijdsverschil is 8 uur.

Welcome to 2006. And what a start to the New Year it was. Like 99% of the world’s population, I started 2006 incredibly liquored up, owing to the fact that I spent the last hours of 2005 downing a wide array of alcoholic beverages. But hey, there are few better reasons to party. It was New Year’s, I was back in E-town amongst my good friends here, the Oil were locked in a fight for control over the Northwest Division with the evil Calgary Flames, and gosh darn it, I was determined to party like I was 25 again. The evening [View Full Entry]
