Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

So here we are, March 2nd. 5 months and 28 days until we depart. Our plane tickets have been booked, one way from Calgary to Tokyo on August 31st. It's all becoming very real! We had our first appointment at the travel clinic and each received FIVE shots in our arms! We have FIVE remaining appointments. Hopefully the cost isn't too high because I don't have health care benefits to cover them. We are settled in the new house although it doesn't *quite* feel like home since we are packing it all up again in 5 months. I look forward to [View Full Entry]

Well it is the day before I leave and I'm really happy! It has been a long awaited journey and I'm really excited to meet up with Stephan and the unknown Rene. I'm doing this entry on my own, but as of Friday March 3rd it will include the 3 of us. The boys have already been on their own journey for over 60 days. They have been mainly working on the harvest trail picking fruit. Until next time... Much Love, Rhea [View Full Entry]

Banff to Vancouver North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff
Just before going to bed Dr. Nicole gave me a couple of night time cold and flu tablets, and combined with the red wine I had a great sleep even though I could have had a few more hours. We had the complimentary continental breakfast with Nicole and Christian, before dropping them off at the Banff Hot Springs Hotel and heading on our way. It was great the way we hit it off with them, and is what travelling is all about. After saying our goodbyes we had to steel ourselves for the long journey back to Vancouver which some people [View Full Entry]

I did manage to get some sleep, but I still woke up feeling pretty shabby. Headache, dry sore throat, runny nose. It's so cold outside, and so warm and humid inside that your body doesn't know what is going on. We had planned to have breakfast at the Athabasca, but it wasn't open so we went across the road. It was clear sky as far as the eye could see, as well as there being a few stars, and of course huge snow covered mountains. Beck went and got me some aspirin which seemed to help a bit. After breakfast we [View Full Entry]

We have now driven over 2500kms and are residing in Banff. We have a 3300km limit and are in the wrong province - may be paying extra for the car, dammit! I haven't been snowboarding in over a week (poor thing) as have been ill, but there's more to life here. Just walking around is a high - the mountains here are truly alpine in appearance - no more rounded hills, instead jagged peaks and hanging glaciers. I am meeting my friend Alex from Hull ski club here today which is cool as he was a local here two years ago [View Full Entry]

Maligne Canyon North America » Canada » Alberta » Jasper
It is mighty cold this morning. We packed the car with our stuff, and waited in the foyer to be picked up. It's been snowing and is pretty cloudy so I'm not sure if we'll drive to Banff this afternoon. Trevor our guide picked us up for our Maligne Canyon Icewalk. There were seven other people in the group, a family of five from Northern Canada and a couple from Sydney. We had to call into the store to pick up winter boots and ice cleats, which was handy because the weather had turned really cold, although they didn't quite go [View Full Entry]
