Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

17 Days North America » Canada » Alberta » Calgary
EEEEEEKKKK.... 17 days left! Seems like the less # of days, the bigger the list, the less sleep, the more giggles.Jenn, how is your list looking?Just booked our accommodation - destination Koh Phangang. (after Bangkok and an 8 hour train ride to Surat Thani. The beach is called Koh Tao(supposedly one of the most amazing beaches in the world, renowned for the sunsets). Our shack is beachfront, (i can already here the ocean); pimped out with 1 double bed (Jenn and I don’t mind sharing) but at least we have aircon (bonus). This cozy spot is far enough away from the [View Full Entry]

Me and Charles arrived in Calgary yesterday, after a delayed flight (only by half an hour). We managed to take a shuttle bus to the hostel. The hostel is not bad, I guess it quiet similar to most hostels.I have found that its very quiet in Calgary, shops dont' open till 12 on a Sunday. You can move aross the city via these walkways that connect the buildings so you do not need to go out in the cold. Which it is about -5 to -10 in the day, thank god for thremal underware. I am currently in the libary so i [View Full Entry]

Speed skating North America » Canada » Alberta » Calgary
Before I came to Calgary, the only reason why I new this city was because of the Olympics. And now I am here, living in a building which was build for the athletes, next to the Olympic Oval, which has the second fastest ice in the world. I must admit that, although I'm Dutch, I'm not that well informed about all the speed skating matches. Imagine my surprise, when I heard the All-round World Championship would be organized in the Olympic Oval, which means almost in my backyard! So of course me and some other internationals bought tickets for the championship. [View Full Entry]

i always knew that i can be a bit obsessive about some things sometimes. but no one, not even me, knew how OCD i was until i started planning my trip to europe. Planning flights, hostels, and tours? Thats normal. I'd call you crazy if you booked that all a day before leaving. Buying guidebooks? Totally still a sane decision. They're handy to have. Buying the guidebooks with maps? Definately neccissary. i HATE being lost. Booking tickets for the London Eye and Madame Tuddauds in March ? Thats more my style. (ps: totally have them already) Buyin [View Full Entry]

Sunshine again North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff » Sunshine
I'll add some pic's asap ]The snow is still great... So of course we had to make use of the fact that we're so close to so many ski areas once again. I mean, when I'm back in Holland I can't just go skiing for just one day anymore. Therefore, we rented a car (always very convenient, that means we can do groceries by car the evening before :)) and drove to Sunshine once again. The only not so great thing was that it was pretty cold. As many people who know me well already have experienced, I'm not very good [View Full Entry]

Juicing crab apples
Out quading

We’ve had some great conditions in the mountains since I last updated you all. For about a week in January it snowed non-stop up at Sunshine, over 80cms fell in just a couple of days so conditions were just amazing. We also took advantage of the weather and took a trip over to Kicking Horse in Golden. It’s a couple of hours away from Banff but well worth heading out to in good conditions, three big powder bowls to keep you occupied and the best thing about it is that there are no beginners there! Which in some ways was not [View Full Entry]

Oh yeah...nothing like a leisurly drive from Edmonton to Calgary at 2 in the morning! This should be an interesting journey, once we land in Costa Rica, probably along the way we'll hit Panama and see the canal. That's pretty much the only plans we've made but who cares! It's a holiday! [View Full Entry]

Well, time to start packing! Got a pretty decent flight schedule down to San Jose which only has one stop in Phoenix which has a 6 hour layover. We land in San Jose at around 10:30 at night and probably hit the hay...maybe... [View Full Entry]

As we drove to the border of Canada and USA I started having one of those "I can't believe im doing this sort of moments." Driving over the Canada/USA border, light snow falling, I was getting really excited about the next part of our journey. We got to the border control and had to go to the immigration office to get our passports stamped. The woman at the desk was looking really frustrated as she was trying to get information out of a chinese guy who couldn't speak english. It reminded me of my days at monash talking to international students [View Full Entry]
