Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Well here I am getting ready for the trip. I'm just testing this thing out now to make sure that it works before I go over because if it doesn't that would require some last minute playing around. I've almost finished all my shopping and by the end of this week I will have my pack all ready to go. The passports still haven’t come in yet and I just found out that my bus ticket was reserved for a Glynn Jones with the wrong first name and also that for some reason they think I’m a female so needless to [View Full Entry]

Mmmmmk. I'm still here. But the good news is that i leave in 98 days! Ok. It's still a relatively long wait. But it's getting closer, so i'm ok with it. Flights are now completely booked. And tours. So really theres nothing left to obsess over. AND IT DRIVES ME NUTS! I'm so excited. I can't wait to leave. And all that I have left to focus on is school. Now how heinously boring is THAT? But good news: I might be taking a French class from the end of April to the end of June. So that will keep me [View Full Entry]

Zoef… zoef… zoef…

Yesterday I woke up early at 8.30 so that I could set out on this cycle ride to the Canyon. Chaz stayed behind as it was a 30 mile ride and at least a two hour walk down the canyon . I hired a bike for 36$ at Banff and cycled along the Bow Valley highway, which is a great cycle route to do. Not to hilly, though it all uphill on the way there. Johnston Canyon must be the most beautiful place in the whole world. It’s a little gorge with 7 waterfalls running thought it. It is so stunning, [View Full Entry]

I've somehow managed to become severely behind on my blogs so I'll just start from the transition from the East to the West. After spending 2 and a half days on a train I arrived in Jasper, with 2 french lads by my side that I'd met on the train, neither of whom spoke more than 2 words of English between them! I was supposed to be meeting Lucy later that night in the hostel, but when I got to the station, I was standing on the platform and I saw someone running towards me...It was Lucy! She'd got an earlier [View Full Entry]

Yesterday we walked up Sulphur mountain; it was about a 2 hour walk to the summit. The views where really amazing as you could see down into the Banff valley. The pathway was a bit slippery as it was covered in ice. When we got to the top the view of snow clad mountains and meandering rivers was worth the effort it took to climb the mountain. We only had 10 minutes at the top as the last gondola down was at 5.00pm. Later on in the evening we when to the restaurant that they have in the hostel, I had [View Full Entry]

We have just arrived in Banff today, after a 128km bus journey from Calgary. The hostel is a little outside of Banff at the top of a large hill that wasn’t too fun to trek up. On our last day in Calgary we visited Glenbow Museum and the Canadian Olympic Park. The museum was very interesting; it was all about the First Nation people, though my attention did start to waver after a while. We took the C-train and then caught the 408 bus to arrive at COP (Canadian Olympic Park) as it was a bit out of town. It was [View Full Entry]
