Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

So it just occurred to me that I leave for Thailand in less than a month, which may still seem like a lot of time, but when you take into consideration all the things I still have to get organized before I go, it would be a fair assumption to say that I’ll be up to my eyeballs in last minute shit soon enough. Hopefully I’ll be able to limp my way through finals and then can really buckle down and focus on the 3 months ahead of me which will consist of lounging on the beach or in the jungle [View Full Entry]

Alrighty, so here we go. the most amazing adventure journal you'll ever read! (and if you think that's true, I have the deed to a building on the moon I can sell you....) . Although it might not be THE best adventure blog, it's still gunna be fab. So stay tuned! I'm moving to Mexico for a year, (and coming from northern Alberta, It's quite the change). I leave sometime near the beginning of August, but I don't know the exact day, so the countdown is going to be a little vague (I'm sure all you kind souls will forgive me). [View Full Entry]

Our journey from Koh Lanta to Bangkok felt like absolute luxury. There were beds with pillows and blankets on the train. I was situated beside a local family from Bangkok on the train and I enjoyed helping their five-year-old practice her English! So cute! When we arrived in Bangkok, we bumped into Mani, one of our friends from Koh Lanta, and found accommodations with her. We found a simple, but clean little guest house away from the noise and chaos of Bangkok! We spent the last three days of our trip shopping and sightseeing. We spent the first part of the [View Full Entry]

After working January and February in SLC for Exum of Utah, I headed out on the road to Canada. The idea of spending some ice climbing time in the Rockies came about as I was linking up some climbs down in Ouray with Canadian climber and photographer Jon Walsh. We figured that Canada would be a great place to go on an ice climbing binge and March would be a good time as I would be done with work and he would be back from a trip down in Patagonia. So, there I was, on the road to Canada in [View Full Entry]

They said on the trip criteria that no alpine ski touring experience was necessary and a 'moderate' level of fitness was required, which is a bit like telling an office worker that running for the bus in the morning is adequate training for running the London Marathon......!! I'm talking about a 3 day back country alpine ski touring trip that I went on last week on the Wapta Icefields. The Wapta Icefields are comprised of a series of Glaciers that run along the Continental Divide from Peyto Lake to the North and the Trans Canada Highway to the south. The area [View Full Entry]

I arrived off the lovely Greyhound experience from Kelowna at 6am. Dealing with a time zone change, in addition to daylight savings caused a brain confusion that I hadn't planned on for my start in Alberta. I chowed down on some breakfast before venturing off to the hostel in town, and planning my time in Calgary. I hid in the hostel with a book in hand trying to sort out some computer issues, before sailing off into the streets. The sky was blue, the air was crisp and cool, why hadn't I explored earlier? The hostel was cozy on the inside, [View Full Entry]

G'day !! I'm in Banff at the moment and absolutely loving it ! It is very pretty and is in the heart of the rockies. Snowy mountains everywhere. It is very touristy here, alot like a Port Douglas. I've been here just over a week, just been chillin' out with my cousin from Melbourne Shannon. He is working at a local restaurant/bar called "Bumpers" so whenever he goes to work, i've just been trying to keep myself busy. We've been out a few times on the town having a few (or alot of drinks) meeting and catching up with the locals. [View Full Entry]

Banff continued to be an amazing part of my trip. We met some great people and decided that we wanted to stay around a bit longer than planned. We noticed in reception a sign looking for volunteers so we enquired what that was all about. It turned out that if you volunteered to work in the hostel between 9am-1pm during the day, you could get a free nights accommodation-BRILLIANT! Or so we thought! The next morning at 8am, Lucy and I awoke and resentlfully got up...my tonsils were on fire and I considered pulling a sicky but figured on day 1 [View Full Entry]

Europe goes crazy about soccer, Canada however is more into HOCKEY! As mentioned before, I must admit I can't help loving that sport either.. So after a Dino's and a Hitmen game it was time for the real thing.. The Flames!!! As the third largest city in Canada (after Montreal and Toronto), Calgary ofcourse must have a decent hockey team, and they do, the Calgary Flames are doing pretty good, 3rd in their league at the moment. Therefore, one of the things I had to do before leaving Calgary was to visit the Flames. During a group meeting Norbert, another Dutch [View Full Entry]

4 Days left... North America » Canada » Alberta » Calgary
Only 4 days left until departure. Days are flying by, seems that there are so many last minute things to do! At the gym this morning (Kirsten can attest to this), my scrambled thoughts are coming out in rather humorous sentences... something about the fact that I would never trust anyone to tint my lows and brashes... lol. This is a good indication of where my head is at right now. Excited - absolutely! the last time I left the continent it was 1993. I am looking forward to a world entirely different from what I am used to, the experiences [View Full Entry]
