Living it Up in a Mountain Town - Banff
Published: June 3rd 2006North America » Canada » Alberta » BanffWe've spent the last few days generally taking it easy and getting to know Banff and its surrounds. I was fully prepared to not like Banff, given how big a tourist destination it is, but must admit I have been pleasantly surprised. Yes, admittedly, it is touristy, very touristy, too touristy, but unlike many similar places, underneath it all, it does possess a genuine, inoffensive charm that no amount of marketing can either replicate or destroy. As long as you walk past the duty-free and souvenir shops, you will find, at its core, a thriving little mountain town in an unforgettably beautiful setting. And what better way to remedy our days of undernourishment, living off a monodiet of crackers, tomatoes and cheese, than by dining at a few of Banff's finer restaurants? We had quite the ... read more
Victory to the Elk - Lake Louise to Banff
Published: June 3rd 2006North America » Canada » Alberta » BanffJust to confirm our worst suspicions, while shaking out the tent during pack-up this morning, we were showered not with water droplets but rather projectile ice cubes - I kid you not. Luckily, our next stop, Banff, is meant to be marginally warmer. The day was spent taking our time along the scenic drive between Lake Louise and Banff, where we set up camp in a nice spot on Tunnel Mountain (yes, yes, we should know better by now than to keep camping up mountains). Since there was some time left before nightfall, this was our chance to go looking for the elusive elk we'd been reading so much about. Local sources told us that the best place to fulfil this mission, believe it or not, was the Banff Fairmont Hotel's golf course. Apparently, elk, being ... read more
"Silence is the true friend that never betrays" -Confucius August 14, 2005, Sunday. We were off to Banff today, a bit of a yuppy town and very built up. Banff was established in 1885, as Canada’s first National Park, and covers 2,564 miles. We walked through the town and stopped at some of the outdoor shops. Did some food shopping and took the Bow Valley Parkway back to Lake Louise, somewhat more scenic and definitely a “Bob Road”. August 15, 2005, Monday. Today is our day to walk on a glacier! We drove back to the Columbia Ice Field. As we drove we saw the very best of the Rocky Mountain wildlife. The Icefield is a living remnant of the Ice Age when wooly mammoths and saber-toothed tigers roamed the continent. The Athabasca Glacier and ... read more
Hey guys. So the idea of me staying in one place for more than a few days on a road trip seemed so ridiculous that i randomly ended up in banff two days ago. Val ended up in edmonton half way through the trip and was heading to whistler the next day, so of course we had to come to banff on the way through. That night i took her to every bar in town. Matt wood kindly hooked us up when we were in need of a place to rest our drunken selves.....the next day i took val on a tour of banff......drunk still and beginning a hang over. with banff being so transient, i wasnt really expecting to walk down the street and recognize anyone. i have run into many long lost friends in ... read more

So Kate and I are finally leaving....in about half an hour actually so this will be quick. The last week in Banff has been great. We finnished up at Sunshine on Monday. Went up to watch the slush cup which was classic. Some great costumes and huge splashes. Then after all the punter went home we got to party. Sunshine put on a great night, we had a pig on the spit for dinner, it was so good. Spent Tuesday recovering then on Wednesday we went white water rafting on the Kiking Horse river. It was so much fun. Unfortunatly the river wasn't running very high, but was still managed to get wet from head to foot and get stuck on a rock. One of the highlights of this day was we saw a black bear ... read more
So last week I saw bears 5 times in 5days, once a lone Black bear, another time a lone grizzly, and the rest of the time it was mama Grizzly and her two cubs... such amazing animals, and pretty chilled out compared to all the nasty stories I'd heard, they didn't even seem to mind when me and Wade were this close to them - sooo cool! there are people who've lived here for 5 years and havn't seen a bear once so we're pretty lucky. Since my last blog I've just pretty much been working and partying, and syching myself back up for the semi-retired life... it was a long weekend last weekend so me, Kim, Paul and Jake went on a roady up to Jasper. was great to get out and about, I havn't ... read more
This is my first Travel Blog page so please excuses spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes and any other kind of mistake that will appear. This is my third time righting this little blog, there are a number of excuses one being this computer I'm on has really high virus protection on it and the other being that some times I can just be an idiot. So basically my last two attempts at a journal covered the highlights and lowlights of Banff. They where a bit more detailed than this one is going to be. I have about 10 days left in Banff and only 6 more days at work so I'm really starting to look forward to traveling with Kate Lacey. But the purpose of this Journal was to talk out the last 7 long but great ... read more
Well Dan's been gone for a few weeks now, he's off down in Costa Rica soaking up the sun and enjoying the surf while I'm left back here at the coalface trying to save up and visit him. Check out his blog in the Costa Rica section to see what he's been up to. Meanwhile, the weather's been warming up here, and like Dan said in the last blog I finally got a good electrical job for a little local company in Banff which is awesome. apart from that I have to get up early now, and think about stuff during the day, and rip the crap out of my poor hands that haven't even seen tools for over a year now... great to have some money coming in again though, times were getting tough there ... read more
