A few really busy weeks, nice weather, and a headful of thoughts too personal to blog about are collectively responsible for postponing this entry. Life is full of all types of surprises. Three weekends ago, Bahar Şenlikleri, Hacettepe Üniversitesi's annual Spring Festival, took place. It was also my first visit to our large, handsome stone amphitheater - probably the nicest thing ever built on this campus. It seems to be halfway between a modern amphitheater and some of the ancient ones that are on many tourist itineraries in this country. There are even two rows of columns lining the road on the walk in, as if they supported an imposing structure during ancient times... but they didn't. It was a weekend of live music, festival food and other festivities. The türkü (one type of traditional Turkish ... read more

So, we finally made it to Jordan last night a bit after 7:00pm here and 12:00pm your time. We set our room up and went to bed. Class starts at 9:00am each day. This morning we had our first experiences with public transportation! The first was a bus, it was ok. We went to the vegetable and fruit market and were given a list of them in Arabic, with the pronunciations of course! That was an experience in itself. From there we went to the completely modern Mecca Mall. Wow, I am telling you this puts our malls to shame, including Circle Center. It is 4 or 5 levels high with tons of stuff, I believe there is also a movie theater. From there we came back to eat lunch and that is pretty much the ... read more

Ederine Day 2: 5/14/08 I met the father of my host family, Ismet Acikoz, first thing this morning. He was held up in customs last night when coming home from Greece. I met the wives of the Rotarians in the newer part of town. Much to my surprise my host mother didn’t join us for breakfast. (This was very different from my first host family because they were with me all day every day ) My day started with breakfast in the woods at a small café. We had the norm… cheese, cucumber, tomatoes, salami, a boiled egg, and tea. From there we leisurely worked our way over to the Selimiye Mosque to have coffee. After we finished drinking coffee, we went inside the Mosque. Before entering the Mosque you must take your shoes off and ... read more

Monday continued Once the veges were chopped and cleared away I read for a while and looked at the view which is very similar to the mountains in Dubai these are slightly redder but similar none the less. Lunch was eventually served at 2:30 and there was masses of it. We had chopped correctly as it was a vegetable stew which was yummy and just what was needed!! After this was all cleared away we started to make jam - rose and mint jam to be precise! I was given the first stirring order which was okay though I was terrified it would burn luckily it didn't and when I handed it over to the next person it was bubbling away!! Talked to some of the people staying at the monastry though sometimes it was easier ... read more

Border Crossing After the previous day’s disappointment and a poor night’s sleep we were up early; 7.30am saw us at a modern bus office, awaiting our bus to Oromiyhe. Come 9.00am and three different bus offices later (each one progressively more dingy) we finally boarded the bus. The journey through south east Turkey and into Iran was a joy; winding through stunningly beautiful mountains and over high, snow covered passes. It’s a Kurdish area and whilst we felt safe, apparently local people will not use the route other than during the day, thus explaining the number of military checkpoints we had to pass through for the tourists’ protection. Later we heard that there had been some trouble in the area sadly resulting in deaths on both sides but every effort is made to keep tourists ... read more

haha so Im about to take another overnıght bus tonıght. Last nıght wasnt so bad actually. I asked the young attendents ıf I could lay down at the back of the bus and they let me, so between that and the cold medıcıne, I dıdnt get a horrıble sleep. I arrıved 4:00 to a Nevşehır (whıch ıs about 20 mınutes from Gömere, where I needed to go). Obvıously the taxı buses werent goıng at thıs hour and I thought was goıng to be stranded but the nıce attendents talked to the bus drıver and they drove the Greyhound all the way to Gömere just for lıttle old me. People are so kınd. Then a man helped me to get a room so I could sleep a few hours before settıng out. It was well worth the ... read more

Last night I arrived in Jordan around 7pm. The process of getting into the country was easier than it was to get into Cairo for my layover! We arrived and got our visas, then our bags, and then headed to security. After we went through security, we found our taxi which was waiting for us with a sign in a sea of taxi drivers! We drove through Amman to arrive at ACOR (American Center of Research) where students and archeologist from American can stay at a cheap rate. Upon arriving, we unpacked and met up with other members of our group. I am staying in an apartment with 3 other girls. We got lucky for we got one of the larger apartment suites. We have a living room, dining room, a kitchenette, bathroom, and 2 bedrooms. ... read more

Well I finally arrived in Abu Dhabi last night after a very long journey. I left Kansas City at 2:30pm on Saturday on an earlier flight than I originally planned, so that I could be sure to avoid bad weather and make my connecting flight. Long story short, leaving early was unnecessary as my next two flights were delayed and I arrived in Abu Dhabi at approximately 10:30pm on Monday night (UAE time). The good news is that I spent yesterday in Manchester, England and I ended up running into some ladies from the airport in Philly, they live in KC and one of them used to work for Cerner! Anyway, we had dinner and drinks together and they were so fun…they are going on a tour of the English countryside, visiting places that Jane Austin ... read more

May 12th or is it the 13th My morning started with the traditional Turkish breakfast: cucumber, tomato, many cheeses, toast, boiled eggs, olives, and tea. The Turkish people drink A LOT of tea and coffee. After breakfast I met up with the team at the VW dealership. The owner let us borrow a van for the day. Did I mention that Turkish people drive CRAZY! There is no speed limit, they don’t wear seat belts, and will pull out in front of anyone. Our first stop was at a private school PreK-8. It was SO NICE. The Kindergarteners have their own floor of the school. Each subject has its own room: centers, art, music, nap, Movie Theater, gym, and a room for normal subjects. Each student has an actual bed to sleep in for nap time. ... read more

Tuesday 13th May - Woke up at 8am for hotel breakfast and then caught a cab for a tour of The Mosque - one of the very few that are open for the public to enter and take photos. I found it very informative about Islamic culture and then watched as a muslim prayed before Allah (God). Caught a cab to Jumeirah again, this time to get daylight photos of the Madinat and Burj Al Arab as I was disappointed the ones I took the previous night did not turn out well. Then another cab across to the Mall or Emirates - The biggest shopping complex I have ever seen which houses an indoor ski centre. Bought a pair of Arnette sunglasses and then chatted to an American girl who has been living in Dubai for ... read more
