The weather has cleared. It is not clear and sunny but hazy and hot. The dust is still thick in the air but it does not blow too hard so that you do not need goggles. Another day of aclimization. My buddies and I spent the day getting ready for tomorrow's training. We are exploring the camp and figuring out the best places for Internet and phone use. There was a concert tonight. The Air Force has a pop/rock band that plays covers all over the theater of operations. My friend Mark and I sat outside and enjoyed some ice cream during the show. The band played some really new tunes that I did not know the names of but played some clasics too. I really enjoyed the country and rock. The band played American Pie and ... read more

5/16/o8 Luleburgaz Day 2 Mornings here start much later than ours… around 10:00am. This morning we met with government officials such as the mayor and governor. Their system is based on the French government and is somewhat different from the system used in America. The mayor is in charge of physical things in the city such as roads, buildings, sewer, and new construction. He is elected into a 5 year position and can stay in office for an unlimited number of terms as long as he is reelected. The governor is appointed by the Turkish government and can only serve one five year term in a city. After holding this office governors usually move up in power. Governor is in charge of the police money and schools (people.) We met both of these men today! The ... read more

El ... read more

... read more

Hello everyone! This will probably be short, it is 10pm here and I have reading to do and some sleep to get:) Today we did not have class until 3:30ish so, I basically got up early and lounged around the place we are staying, it was nice. Then we went to a family's home and had a traditional Jordanian dinner. It was good. There was chicken and lamb with lots of new spices! It was almost too much to handle all at once. There were about 30 people total. There were lots of people our ages from the family, and most spoke English very well. Children in Jordan are required to learn English from about what is the equivalent age of 1st grade for us. Then most of us went to a cafe type place and ... read more

Well we went on a wee dive trip on the weekend to Al Aqqa in Fuijairah which was just lovely. I purchased an advanced diving course for Dave’s birthday present as well as two nights accommodation at the lovely 5 star Le Meridien Al Aqqa Beach Resort. I had stayed at this hotel with Ma and Pa Ade when they were over at xmas and at the time I thought that it was just lovely so I decided to go back with Mr Norman. Dave was a little bit apprehensive at doing the course, but he really had nothing to worry about as he is a good diver. So on the Thursday night we drove over to Al Aqqa from Dubai after work (approx a 1.5 hour drive) and checked into our lovely room for the ... read more

While I am here, I am working at Corniche Hospital and helping to train the nurses on the software that they are using. The word Corniche means 'by the sea,' and it is named acurately as we are right here on the coast of the Persian Gulf. I am teaching classes as well as holding help sessions to get the end-users ready for their go-live event. It is an interesting situation because there are multiple nationalities and therefore multiple languages that have varying degrees of impact on their learning. Overall, everyone is understanding and patient and working very hard. I did not know this until just recently, but the work week here in the UAE is Sunday through Thursday, so today is my last day of work for the week. This weekend I plan to do ... read more

So after my last entry I went to find some lunch on the way I bumped into one of my roommates who suggested the cafe in the botanical gardens as it did good chicken sandwiches! Thinking that this would be a sandwich rather than a shwarma I merrily headed over there. My first upset was that they had no chicken left so I ordered another sandwich and much to my dismay I found that it was very shwarma like and totally not what I was expecting! Despite not eating much Arabic food per se I am beginning to crave the odd English food and some random ones as well I shall be pigging out on my return! Anyhow got back to the hotel to collect my luggage and meet up with Paulina so we could share ... read more
