Background: North Yemen became independent of the Ottoman Empire in 1918. The British, who had set up a protectorate area around the southern port of Aden in the 19th century, withdrew in 1967 from what became South Yemen. Three years later, the southern government adopted a Marxist orientation. The massive exodus of hundreds of thousands of Yemenis from the south to the north contributed to two decades of hostility between the states. The two countries were formally unified as the Republic of Yemen in 1990. A southern secessionist movement in 1994 was quickly subdued. In 2000, Saudi Arabia and Yemen agreed to a delimitation of their border.

The next few days onboard pass fairly uneventfully except for the overwhelming heat and humidity. It sucks the life out of you, suppresses the appetite - ah well, at least it's good for the waist... the temperature is topping 35 degrees celcius and 32% humidity - the hatch in my cabin is as wide as it will go but still not a whiff of air. I didn't quite expect it to be this hot so now I am counting the days until we get to Yemen - maybe I can book myself into a hotel for a night - preferably one [View Full Entry]

Happy to be in an Arab country again. Not just because now we can relax about taking care of our belongings or to be ripped off at everyday purchasing, but is nice to feel in a familiar culture - I'm surprised to notice how I missed the call to pray at 4:30 in the morning. After so long changing places every two or three days we needed some rest. Stop for a while in the same place, have a bed, a kitchen (is amazing how much we missed a kitchen!!). But stay without doing something can be really boring. So if [View Full Entry]

I have been the Fulla, the local Barbie doll, of my yemeni friends lately, that liked to see me getting dressed in yemeni , or arabic clothes just for the fun of it. I wish I could put pictures of some of the wonderful women I met here in Sana'a but it's been impossible to have their permission or their husbands for that matter. IMPOSSIBLE! Even for the henna session, I tried to take a picture of Sabah doing it on me, at least her hands, and she said he husband wouldn't allow it. Out of respect I didn't even [View Full Entry]

Yes, it happened yesterday. A full celebration, the girls putting on some make up on me, fixing my hair, bringing me some tea during the whole preparation, dressing me up in pink, even got the youyou part. I did marry in pink, don't ask me why. It was intense, the little girls wanting to be close to the bride, "aaroussa", because she is special and the queen of the day, I was lucky to have some girls dancing for me too, in the yemeni style. The men were upstairs chilling and chewing Qat in the meantime. Yes, men and woman [View Full Entry]

Yeah man - we’ve been in Yemen! Last Christmas and New Year dad brought us with him to Yemen. “Yemen” sounds like “Yeah man” so we first thought he was joking with us. But there is actually a country called Yemen. We think it’s a strange name for a country. But we are glad they didn’t call it “Shit man”. That would have been even more strange. To go to Yemen we had to go via Istanbul. We had one day in Istanbul and there we had a look at the central town. It was a very nice place but right [View Full Entry]

Yemen part IV - The south and the west First I'd like to write a little about the habit of chewing khat. Khat is in most countries in the World considered a drug and consequently illegal. In countries where it is legal however, for instance in Yemen but also in Ethiopia for instance, it is used by a very high percentage of the population. The male population I should add. I'm not sure but I don't think women ary very big khat chewers. I'll get back to what I know about the women in Yemen later on. In the afternoon in [View Full Entry]

The northern regions First I'd like to try to give you an idea about how it looks in Yemen and what things that strikes me as different from home. I find this a bit difficult to describe things like that but I hope you get an idea from this list * In the smaller towns the streets are sometimes unpaved * The land is mainly very dry and dusty * There is often a layer of dust on the streets and on buildings * Some days the air is thick with dust * The main roads are paved but there are [View Full Entry]

Yemen part II - Wadi Hadramawt The word Wadi might be new for some people. It basically means riverbed. The riverbeds in eastern Yemen are dry for most of the year. But the precious little rainwater that does come gathers in the Wadis and therefor making them more suitable for agriculture than other land in this part of the country. Consequently people mostly live in or close by the Wadis and that makes them interesting for us to visit. On the 25 th of December we took a flight from Sana'a in the west to Sayun in Wadi Hadramawt. When we [View Full Entry]
