Unfortunately, the workmen at the building site across from the hotel decided to work all night, so we have had very little sleep. They seemed to stop at about 5.00am, probably to go to prayers, so we took the opportunity to get some sleep then. So no visit to the roof and the swimming pool this morning, and no room service breakfast either. Just time to have a shower and finish the packing before it is time to check out for midday. Our final hotel in Dubai is the Ibis One Central in the World Trade Centre area of the city. We have had much debate about where we would stay for these last four days. We wanted to stay in Al Rigga, where we stayed first last year, but travelling to, from and through this ... read more

Travel much more successful today. Caught the metro to Dubai Mall and then the Big Bus Tour to Dhow Wharfage for our boat ride on the creek. Came back to the hotel for a swim in the rooftop pool and now going to get ready for our Marina Dhow Cruise Dinner tonight. Hopefully have included yesterday's promised photo of the view from our window this time. Flying on to Johannesburg SA after lunch tomorrow.... read more

We have nothing planned for today, so we spend the morning on the roof top sunbathing and swimming. It was great to have some time to sunbathe in amongst all the visiting we are doing. For lunch today, we wander into the Mall of the Emirates food court. No vouchers to use for today, so we end up at two different venues. George had Texas Chicken again. He thinks this is maybe as good as his old favourite KFC. Theresa tried out Magic Wok. We have tried them once in this trip, but that was in Dubai Mall and unfortunately, the food was not hot enough. Today’s food was as hot as you would expect it to be. Maybe we will give them another try. George has been feeling a bit under the weather for a ... read more

Up at 3:30, flight socks on and quick cup of tea. Picked up by taxi by Patrick at 4:30am. Quite busy on road especially around terminal 5. Dropped off at Heathrow terminal 3. Dropped off bags and through security. Saw A380 airbus outside waiting for us. Double decker. Boarded and took off 9:05. So big but rose effortlessly with seemingly little speed. Time passed quickly with lots of onboard entertainment and two meals. Landed early 6:45pm already dark. Made it through airport and onto metro. Came out at Dubai Marina and the 32degree heat covered us like a hot blanket. Hotel Marina Byblos thankfully near. Good room. Had quick shower and straight to bed, once we had mastered remote control light switches! Lokking forward to seeing our surroundings in the daylight.... read more

Got up this morning and remembered I had left my carefully chosen sun hat on the plane! After breakfast left the hotel in unbelievable heat and soon realised why most people use taxis. We were looking for the bus stop for our Big Bus Tour which we had prebooked. After lots of walking and asking for help we gave in and got in a taxi airconditioned and returned us to sanity. Can't imagine I could ever cope living here. Got out to the Palms. Lots of expensive hotels and apartments. Had lunch there and then caught the bus to Dubai Mall. Went passed the biggest indoor ski resort which seems bizarre in this heat but did sound inviting! Lots of smog and building sites on the way. Blissful to get back into airconditioning! Made for the ... read more

An amazing first day but not without its problems. Difficult to work out the bus stops for the Big Bus Tour which we had prepaid. There is a map for the 3 routes but you don't get that until you change your e-tickets for real tickets and we were misdirected by several people who should have known better. When you do find the bus stopping places there are no signs to tell you it is a bus stop. Not a service I would recommend to others although when we finally found the bus the journey was fine with a good commentary system. However, we had walked for an hour in the heat and then caught a taxi before we found the first bus stop! We went to the Dubai Mall (air conditioning ... YES!) where there ... read more

This is another day where we have changed our plans at the last minute. Looking through the Apps for the Entertainer vouchers, we found one for another challenge room. This one is a bit closer to us and a lot easier to get to, but it is for an hour locked inside a room. It’s a kidnapped theme. Although we were pants at the one that we did at Challenge Chambers a couple of weeks ago, we did enjoy it, so we thought we would have a go at another one and see if we are any better. Phobia Dubai is in the new Jumeriah Lake Towers area near the Marina, so yet another new area for us to explore. The metro drops us off a few hundred yards from the offices and it is a ... read more

We have had breakfast delivered to the room again and it was just as good. It comprises of freshly cooked toast, butters and jams, coffee, cornflakes and muffins. What is there not to like. We declined the eggs of choice and sausages. We then made a visit to reception to find out what was happening about our washing machine. We repeated to the receptionist what the mechanic had said yesterday about it being a holiday and she was horrified he had said this to a guest. She assured us that someone would be up to have a look at the machine soon. Sure enough he arrived a few minutes later. He did not even come into the room, just said to leave it with him he would have a new machine with us soon. We left ... read more

We had a last minute change of plans today and we decide to have a lazy day. Our deal at the hotel includes a complimentary room service breakfast so we order, but do not expect too much. The tray that arrived had everything on it including a pot of Arabic coffee. It was a really great way to start the day. We have another bash at drying the clothes in the tumble dryer, but we continually get an error message. A call to reception gets a man at the door very soon. He takes a quick look then declares that there is not a lot he can do today as it is a public holiday, but that he will sort it tomorrow. This seemed fair enough. So we head to the roof for some sun and ... read more

As we got all packed up yesterday, we had the opportunity this morning to spend an hour on the roof before we had to leave the hotel and head out of Abu Dhabi. About half way between Abu Dhabi and Dubai they have recently opened a new service station called the Last Exit, probably because it is near to the border. The design of the area is all about the USA food wagons. Each wagon has its very own drive through area and coloured line leading you to it and then there are also a few parking spaces if you want to get out and walk around the site. The site is very different to anything we have seen anywhere on our travels before. From there, we continued on into Dubai. In Dubai this time, we ... read more
