WEDNESDAY 25th June. We are now back to Civilisation where the computers work; there are no frequent power cuts; the air conditioning works; the hot water is actually hot - and the plug in the bath keeps the water in!; the booze is free - well for 2 hours of the day, so it's a matter of drinking very quickly!; and the pool is great. Mind you it's only 45+C out there but I brought a vest with me! Now I have good Internet access, and I'm chilling out after being up at 12,000' for 6 days , I can depress all you guys I thought that I would put on all my photos with attendant suitable coarse captions, and then over the next 2 days complete my notes on the last 8-9 days in Northern ... read more

Monday 23 June Not really Himalayan India but we are stopping off in Dubai for 5 days on our way home from India. We are staying at The Palace at the One & Only Royal Mirage at Jumeira Beach. It is a beautiful hotel with great service & a fabulous swimming pool. It is hot - said to be 40 - 45C today so we were glad of the pool to cool off. Unfortunately there is only one computer in this part of the hotel & I had to crawl around behind the PC to plug in my camera as there is no USB connection at the front. I will try to add some photos now but if anyone else wants to use the PC I may not get very far. I am now going back ... read more

Dave finally pulled his finger out, got rid of the fat 4WD car, and bought himself a very flash Saab convertible. Dave had got a taste for open-top driving when he used the Peugeot for a short while but wanted a car that a man should drive, not a girl’s car. His appetite was further whetted with the abortive attempt to buy Beach Boy’s Saab (see previous blog when we had a wonderful free week-end at the Danat Resort, Jabal Dana). He’d been um-ing and ah-ing about a Porsche Carrera but couldn’t find the “right one” (you know what’s boys are like) so he finally bit the bullet and went for a blemish-free little Scandinavian number - the only one he’s likely to get as well !!! Paperwork was gob-smackingly easy with 4x4 Motors doing all ... read more

Today I spent the day looking at real estate opportunities. One of the things that everyone says about Dubai is that 20% of the worlds cranes are in Dubai. There is so much construction and there are so many real-estate deals where people double and tripple their money in a relatively short period of time. North Americans are very skeptical because it seems too good to be true, an excellent return in North America is 20%. Dubai has a tremendous amount of investment for development, hence a termendous amount of opportunity. I spent the day reviewing real-estate opportunities at the Taktical Real Estate offices and driving around with Aamar. Aamar took me around to see the sites for the new projects and to provide me with a bit of the lay of the land for Dubai. ... read more

I got to sleep-in a bit but I noticed that I did not drink enough water, I was really tired and sluggish - a 5 hour flight I should have had about 5 litres of water but instead I had 0.5 liters. This means it will take me a few days to adjust. I joined Imi and headed to his office for the day. I know that I would have internet access and could see a bit of Dubai again. It had been approximatley 7 years since I last came to Dubai, I did not recognize the place. At Imi's office the first thing we did was order Tea and then order lunch - guess what? Shwarmas. I spent the good part of the day cleaning up emails, updating the blog and assisting Imi with building ... read more

Well, Last day of the honeymoon today. (Not counting the one and a half days of constant travel we have just started) We went to the 'Old' Gold Souk today, which was pretty cool. There must have been several hundred jewelry shops, that we saw, with some serious bling in every single one of them. After that, we went back the 'The Mall of the Emirates' to have a go at 'Ski Dubai'. We just couldn't get over this joint. An indoor ski slope, with real snow! There is one lift, with a run down either side - a 'snow park' at the bottom for kids to play in, jumps, rails and a quarter pipe. Check out the videos, it's incredible. Had a cruisy afternoon/evening back at the hotel, and now we're at the airport (at ... read more

Dubai, we’ve decided, is a must see destination. The amount of construction going on here is beyond description. By the time they finish what they have set out to do here, in about 10 years, it would be safe to say they will have built more buildings and infrastructure in 20 years than Melbourne (Greater Melbourne) has built in 150+ years. In 1983 they had 20000 tourists pass through, last year they topped 6 MILLION. By 2010 they anticipate 16 MILLION! There are hundreds of hotels, hundreds of 50 storey + office buildings and dozens of ‘world’s biggest’ everything. They have - the world’s tallest building (and it’s not finished yet) - the worlds largest mall will be finished this year - they are building the worlds longest canal - they are building the largest man ... read more

Well yesterday was an experience. For the first time in Dubai I had to go and re-register the car. One of my friends at work told me what he had had to do a few weeks ago so I thought that I was all ready and clued up for the process. Apparently the place opens at 7am and if you get there early you will get in and out quickly otherwise you could be there for hours. So Dave and I were at Tasjeel at 7am. The first thing that you have to do is to have a vehicle inspection, however joy of joys because my car is new (only one year old) it didn't need to have an inspection. So all I would need to do would be to go to the counter and pay ... read more

Hi everyone, finally I get around to starting my blog (hoping beyond hope the computer doesnt crash!) Well my trip started with a fantastic flight to Dubai having all four seats in the middle to myself. Dubai was a lovely 35 degrees on arrival (18:30). My first impression was of disorganisation at the airport unable to locate my pick-up in the throng of people. Eventually sorted it was a short drive to the fabulous hotel. My room being enormous having a great view of the north part of the city and a bed as wide as it was long. As soon as I arrived I went for a walk to find some food, I was disappointed to only locate fast food places and had to resort to McDonalds for dinner. I was however happy to locate ... read more

DUBAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Sunday 1st June, 2008 Dubai - the first thing I noticed when we were flying in to land was all the lights. It reminded me of Las Vegas. Not that I've ever been to Las Vegas, but I can imagine it would be like Dubai. The aiport is fantastic, like a mini version of the metrocentre. I didn't even know what the Dubai currency was when I got there! I had to go to the exchange place and get "ten pound stirling of...the Dubai...stuff." Luckily for me, the man at the desk had ovbiously served innumerable idiots like me who are simply passing through and didn't bother to learn anything about the country. My next problem was when I went to purchase one bottle of waye at a price of '20DH'. I knew ... read more
