Well another week gone and unfortunately I’ve had to say goodbye to Anne. However this has been the best two weeks ever and NYE last night was the best end to our holiday.
Let me go back to the beginning of the week and we started off by visiting the Jumeirah Beach Park which is basically a pay to get in beach. It was all very nice and it wasn’t too busy, but for me personally, a beach is a beach and we must have chosen the only windy day of the holiday to go. The sun was still out but after a few hours of lying around we left without getting our feet wet. We then made our way to pay for the aquarium shark dive which was the following day. Again more profanity used on the roads.
So the big day came and Anne was surprisingly spritely about the upcoming dive, which I was surprised by considering it was, a) her first time and b) it was with sharks. However we went to the dive centre and had a nice Philipino instructor who kept on making this weird sound whenever there was a silence, like some sort
of silence induced tourettes, but hey ho he was nice enough. After a nice talk about the basics along with some nice picture cards, the other 3 divers obviously didn’t understand anything they guy just said, so I enlightened them as to what was going on. We got on the gear and got into the swimming pool where we practiced the drills learned and then swam to the deep end and played underwater catch with some sort of plastic rocket shaped thing, of course my throw was a lot better than Anne’s and don’t believe anything she tells you. So yeah that was the practice session over, oh and there was a plastic crocodile at the bottom of the pool which I attacked Anne with and apparently she laughed but I couldn’t tell.
After getting changed we drove over to the Dubai mall and had some lunch at Nando’s, which was very disappointing compared to the UK one, they don’t even do the double chicken wrap!! Then came the trip to the top of the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, and I have to say, it too was disappointing. Not as disappointing of Nando’s of course,
I mean it’s the double chicken wrap after all but yeah it’s nothing spectacular. I do have to point out though that we have done quite a few amazing things in the last week or so, so I think that might have affected my view on the Khalifa. It’s just that the elevator which is the fastest in the world felt like ...... an elevator, but just got us there quicker than usual and once at the top, yeah there were some awesome views of Dubai, but I just thought is that it? So after about 10 minutes of taking some photos we retreated back to the ground.
Now came the exciting part, shark time. Again we got briefed on the proceedings and watched a dvd with a pretty funny video at the start of everyone running out of the sea, you immediately think shark.... no its a toaster floating in the sea. Queue tag line, lots of people are killed by a toaster each year and only 4 by sharks. Then followed lots of crazy panning in and out shots of sharks just to inspire confidence in the divers. It was amazing. It was crazy to imagine we
were swimming with sharks in a mall, we swam to the bottom of the tank and knelt down there for a bit and just took it all in, sharks swimming right by and rays playing in the bubbles from our regulators it was just amazing. It was also pretty cool waving at all the people on the outside of the tank who were taking pictures of us and Anne absolutely loved it which was a Brucey bonus.
Next up, NYE. What a night, as I have already explained the atmosphere in a previous post, I won’t repeat myself, but we had a top night and plenty of booze (Well I did anyway). I think I should just give a special mention about the fireworks display, 15 minutes it lasted and I have never seen anything like it, small boats out to sea launching hundreds and hundreds of them. We were all taken back by it and the mood around the place was incredible something I’ll never forget.
That brings me to the end of this post, an amazing end to an amazing two weeks. Back to work and back on my own, but now I have my PS3.........
