Modern Turkey was founded in 1923 from the Anatolian remnants of the defeated Ottoman Empire by national hero Mustafa KEMAL, who was later honored with the title Ataturk, or "Father of the Turks." Under his authoritarian leadership, the country adopted wide-ranging social, legal, and political reforms. After a period of one-party rule, an experiment with multi-party politics led to the 1950 election victory of the opposition Democratic Party and the peaceful transfer of power. Since then, Turkish political parties have multiplied, but democracy has been fractured by periods of instability and intermittent military coups (1960, 1971, 1980), which in each case eventually resulted in a return of political power to civilians. In 1997, the military again helped engineer the ouster - popularly dubbed a "post-modern coup" - of the then Islamic-oriented government. Turkey intervened militarily on Cyprus in 1974 to prevent a Greek takeover of the island and has since acted as patron state to the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," which only Turkey recognizes. A separatist insurgency begun in 1984 by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) - now known as the People's Congress of Kurdistan or Kongra-Gel (KGK) - has dominated the Turkish military's attention and claimed more than 30,000 lives, but after the capture of the group's leader in 1999, the insurgents largely withdrew from Turkey, mainly to northern Iraq. In 2004, KGK announced an end to its ceasefire and attacks attributed to the KGK increased. Turkey joined the UN in 1945 and in 1952 it became a member of NATO. In 1964, Turkey became an associate member of the European Community; over the past decade, it has undertaken many reforms to strengthen its democracy and economy, enabling it to begin accession membership talks with the European Union. I'm back in Istanbul for my last day in Turkey and to wash the dirt of my body from the trip I decided to go have a Turkish bath. I decided to go to the most famous hamam in Istanbul, which is 300 years old and has been used in everything from soap adds to an Indiana Jones film. I was slightly nervous at the thought of being violated by some huge Turkish guy, but it all turned out ok. They give you a sheet to change into and some ridiculous wooden flip-flop things to walk around in. First they sent [View Full Entry]

The Bus from Hell
The Blue Lagoon

Hello all! I'm sorry that I don't keep this up better than I do. It takes a long time to load the pages, and pictures take a rediculous ammount of time to load. I have, however, loaded a bunch of pictures on Facebook, and I'll put the link to the album below. I change them out every so often, and I'll try to post things on here telling you when I do that! Anyhow, I went to Turkey for four nights over spring break. It was awesome! We were closer to Kemer than Antalya, but we flew into Antalya on the [View Full Entry]

Tourist central

Middle East » Turkey » Aegean » Fethiye
I have arrived in Fethiye, which is by far the most touristy place I've been in Turkey. Everything costs about double what it has so far. It is also very dead - there was only one other person staying at the most popular hostel in town! None of the blue cruise boats are running and many of the shops are closed. On the way into town from the bus station, our bus driver crashed into another car - ripping the back bumper off. The police arrived and he was made to sit in the back of the police car. Some random [View Full Entry]

Dan with his disgusting pretzels

We all reluctantly decided to leave Olympos to move two hours down the coast to a small town called Kas. We got on a minibus which turned out to be something which could rival Joburg taxis. The driver overtook on blind corners, drove in the oncomming traffic lane and went round corners so fast everyone had to hold on to the seats! After about three hours of insane driving and a thousand stops we finally got to Kas. The village is really pretty and sits on steep cliffs above a harbour. The owner of the hostel met us at the bus [View Full Entry]
