İt all started Wednesday afternoon when İ left Mackay with a cloud of volcanic dust hovering but thankfully not near Brisbane. A red wine and noodle box at the İnternational airport in Brisbane was enough to send me off dosing until my 2am flight.
Onwards to Singapore where İ was able to wander around for a couple of hours between flights. Who knew that the cactus garden was going to be one of the highlights, as well as the pretty water features.
Dubai was so dusty and smoggy and full of humanity in the most amazing variety of dress. Gotta love a Costa coffee, airline coffee just does not do it for me.
Had a great chat to a man from Saudia Arabia and sat next to a little boy from there on the flight to Frankfurt. He enjoyed helping me with my solitare game and was happy to try out his Englısh skills.
And Frankfurt airport how confusing can you be! Multi layers of terminals, multi terminals, but extremely helpful people who all spoke English and went out of their way to assist me.
So first i asked at terminal 2 where the hotels were. Go to terminal 1
The Cactus Garden
Twas a lovely spot for some fresh air they said via the shuttle bus and find the hotel and tour desk. Ah yes that was easy and disembark and go where? İ know, up to where the trains go. OK Not here but found the Sheraton, room price €260 for the night! NOT. So where could i fınd a more affordable hotel i ask? Go to near where the taxis are and look for hotel shuttle buses i was told.
Found the taxis but no shuttles so back inside and information again and the exact location of the hotel and tour desk. Phew.
Hotel booked and shuttle coming, €60 for a room and free shuttle. Go outside near A and wait for the shuttle she said. Well she didn´t say which level. Stood and waited and decided wrong spot, wandered, got lost, asked for help and 2 lovely young men escorted me to the rıght place where my shuttle arrived.
Hotel Ibıs for the night with a lovely beer and cheese, meat and bread platter and free internet prior to bed.
Next day dawned at 4-30am to catch the shuttle back to the airport. 5am arrived with the bus but no driver. What to do? I know, go
All styles
Love the Asian sqaut toilets, NOT in a private car with a complete stranger and his wıfe who were going to the airport. No worries!
Line up at the airport huge, found the right gates, got on my flight and there was a huge delay. Which meant that my connecting flight to Istanbul was looking like just my luggage would get there and not me. But Lufthansa had a lovely lady waiting for the 5 of us connecting to the flight and we followed this woman who deserves a place in the next Olympic team as a speed walker. After a massive cardio workout worthy of a marathon walker we made the flight.
And here i sit in Istanbul at the home of Deger who i hosted in 1999 as a AFS student.
