A day at the beach
The towering reeds along the marshhes After a couple of quiet 'blog' years we're back with a 2011 European trip to Turkey, Greece, Italy and London. First off is a month in Turkey 'cos we liked it so much last time. But this time we aren't doing long distance driving to get around the country but instead are using Dalyan as our base. It is still pre-tourist season and we are enjoyingy village life before we head on further.
Dalyan lies between the sea and Lake Koycegiz on a loop of the river. Separating town and Turtle beach are lagoons and water canals where the rushes stand 5 metres high. You wind your way through them on little flat bottom boats to get down to the beach. The other end of the beach is where the Caretta Caretta (Loggerhead) turtles lay their eggs each year. It is in a preservation area and they have a hospital there to look after injured turtles. Having been to each end now we plan to walk the length before we leave.
It is quiet in Dalyan but under the surface there is plenty going on to prepare for the tourist season - any day - real soon now! Hotels
are being spruced up, boats are being fibreglassed and painted and even built on the streets. We walk everywhere or catch little buses to other towns and the beach. We shop at the local market for fruit and veggies and have found a favourite coffee shop in the square where we can watch the comings and goings.
The other day we crossed the river by rowboat, walked past the old Lycian rock cut tombs dating from 3000 BC to the ruins at Caunos (we can see the tombs from our bedroom window when we wake each morning!).
We took a car for 4 days and drove to Pamukkale where the thermal waters of the travertines flow down the side of the mountain leaving a white landscape of calcium which is quite spectacular. (However this might be the last blog this trip as a lady knocked me on the slope and my new camera fell in the water! It's now residing in bag of rice as I keep my fingers crossed that it will dry out and be OK)
We stayed in a thermal spa hotel and took the waters ( very different to Heviz, Ross and Helen)
Iztuzu beach on the northern end
The wildflowers were amazing - along cliffs and right down to the sea but very nice anyway. The hot pool was full of iron and little calcium (42+ temp) whilst Permukkale water is about 37)
Then we drove down to the coast to explore and finished up with a day in Fethiye. This weekend we go by bus to Antalya and then fly to Cappadoccia. Hopefully there will be some photo's to show you the chimneys and churches of Cappadocia!
