We are back in Istanbul and the holiday is nearly over :-( Can't believe it as it has gone so fast. We fly back to the UK tomorrow.
We went to Gallipoli on Friday on the way back to Istanbul. we got the 7am ferry to the Gallipoli peninsula so we were there very early as the sun was rising. It was very peaceful. We started at ANZAC cove where the allied troops landed on the 25th April (ANZAC day) 1915. When you see how steep the cliffs are you realise why they never really had a chance. Thousands of people died.
There are several graveyards for both allied and Turkish troops. We went to Lone Pine which is one of the most famous and is a memorial to the Australian soldiers who died. It is a very moving place.
Back in Istanbul we have visited all the places we didn't fit in before we left including the Spice Bazaar and the Grand Bazaar. I preferred the Spice Bazaar as I liked all the mountains off Turkish Delight!
We went to Suleymaniye mosque which is the largest mosque in Istanbul and really impressive. We also went
to Rustem Pasa mosque which is a small and quiet mosque. It is famous for it's Iznik tiles.
As Ramadan is nearly over there seemed to be loads of people out in the evening. Once the cannon has gone off to mark sunset (and the end of fasting) everyone seems to be in the streets eating food from all the stalls that are in front of the blue mosque. One restaurant seemed especially popular and there was a huge queue all the way down the street just before sunset.
My time in Turkey is pretty much over. Just time for one more apple tea. Until the next holiday......
Lights! In the Grand Bazaar. Managed to resist temptation and not buy one of these.
