Gallipoli - Anzac War Memorials

So I'm back checking out another World War sight. This time it's in turkey instead of Belgium or northern France.

Gallipoli:
This is where the British underestimated how much people are willing to fight on there own soil. The British looking to clear a way to the Black Sea to allow the Russian navy to get to the Mediterranean to help the British forces. They thought the Turks would give up as soon as they saw the size of their battleships and their guns. They would only have to fire a couple rounds as they pass through the Dardanelles and by the time they reached Istanbul the Turks would have surrendered.
After 2 months trying to pass through the Dardenelles they decided they would have to land ground troops and take over the Gallipopli peninsula. 8000 Anzac (Australians & New Zealanders) troops were to land on a 3 km stretch of flat beech easy to come ashore and get to cover. The British ships ended up missing that drop off point and dropped them off in the next bay. This bay was only 600m and very narrow. Very high and steep hills easily defended by the Turks. "British military planing at it's best." Over the next 8 months over 120,000 Anzac, British, French, and Turkish Troops Died there. It is estimated another 380,000 died from the wounds they received while in the trenches.
I Took a 7 hour Bus tour of the Anzek/British and Turkish Memorial sights through out Gallipoli. Spent the night in Canakkale. The ancient city of Troy is only 30 minutes away. I decided to skip Troy because in 2 days I will be visiting Ephesus.
