On the bus to Ankara 5pm August 17 2017 Lie back and think of England! I thought that might help and it just brought an awkward smile to my face as the middle age man's soapy hands got all close to my exposed goolies. Jane was not there to help being in the Ladies Hamam next door. I was getting a massage and wash from a friendly Turk called Abdul in nothing but my birthday suit. We had decided to have a Turkish bath as we had enjoyed the one in Fethiye some years ago and this one at Safranbolu was recommended. It's main draw back is that it was empty at 9.30am on a Sunday. One gets the impression a visit to the Hamam should be a social occasion which makes it difficult when your ... read more

On the bus to Safranbolu 10am August 16, 2014 We were heading to Ankara to collect visas. We needed to get this process going so left Sofia for Istanbul on an overnight bus from 10pm until 5.30am. We then got the 6am bus to Ankara, another 6 hours further on. For the record the HAS bus from Sofia was cramped. The Metro bus to Ankara was much more spacious so we could catch up on the sleep we did not get on the first leg. There is a great bussle in Ankara with a vibrancy and colour. The population of this modern city seems to live of the street. We booked an appointment via the internet at the Indian Embassy for the following Tuesday to get visas. Our first port of call was the Uzbekhistan embassy. ... read more

Konya, Turkey August 4th 2014 “Either seem as you are or be as you seem” Hazrat Mevlana Mohammed Jalal al-Din (Rumi) Unlike most of my travel in Turkey to date, coming to Konya was a premeditated plan. I had an appointment with the Mevlivi (aka the 'Whirling Dervishes' which is a western appellation). There was something drawing me to this place, one of the longest continually habitated cities in the world, and perhaps the 'holiest' place in Turkey. My first and lasting impression of Konya was that it is a city that knows itself and its place in the world. A prosperous centre, it has a proud and long history, and of course at its heart is the heritage and ever-presence of Mevlana (Rumi). A dervish is actually a Muslim sufi ascetic, often travelling around the ... read more

Amasya, Turkey July 26th 2014 “How does it feel To be on your own With no direction home” Bob Dylan, Like a Rolling Stone “Every traveller knows the feeling: the sudden crisis of purpose, the dreaded but universal question that approaches without warning, taping your shoulder........., waking you at midnight, …..chasing you through the muddy streets …...when everyone else is going home and you are left, alone, ….. : what am I doing here?” Brendan Shannahan, In Turkey I am Beautiful There can be no self-pity for a traveller when he feels alone, for the rewards of travel are otherwise rich and frequent, and he knows well how fortunate he is to be able to take this path. But it happens.. that empty feeling. And specially so during a festive time in a place where you ... read more

Goreme, Kapadokya, Turkey June 8th 2014 “Up in the atmosphere, up where the air is clear....” Mary Poppins “The mother of excess is not joy but joylessness” Frederich Nietzsche Kapadokya is now one of the 'musts' on the very well worn tourist route of Turkey. It is indeed a magic place born of fairytales and sci-fi scenarios. The pointed rocks themselves are known as 'fairy chimneys' and they are in abundance in the Goreme National Park. Thankfully UNESCO has done some work here to preserve them and put a stop on further transformation of them into luxury but funky cave hotels. There are enough of those already. Unfortunately nothing was done to limit the other rampant development of hotels in the valley, which now form eyesores that obcsure the natural and historic landscape. But all is ... read more

Tage. Turkey, small road up into the mountains: Bend 90° left hand, road wet, gravel (slippery??), me in 3rd gear, bike skidded, black hole inmy memory. When I resurfaced: bike on right side, snuggled up against stone, me on back next to bike, no longer on it. After a while (non idea how long) car came, nice driver stopped instead of crashing into us. both - Paul and self back in u pright position. Wanted to take me to hospital/doctor to have me checked. I refused. What I really would have loved was Van, Vanman, Vanman's tea and a couple of enncouraging noises ... read more

May 14th: Beysehir to Cappadocia: breakfast was taken on the senic terrace of the Ali Bilir Hotel with its wonderful view over the lake. However the tv screens in the hotel, and everywhere else we went that day, were full of the terrible mining disaster in Western Turkey. Also, the Turkish flag, which is flown everywhere: in towns, villages, houses, filling stations, shops and hotels, were all flying at half mast. The first part of the drive from Beysehir to Konya, the regional capital, was along fertile valleys and hills; completely unlike the previous day's drive through the mountains. As we got nearer to Konya the terrain became more hilly and arid then, when we crested a hill, the city with a population of nearly 1.2 million was spread out on the plain below. Our route ... read more

... read more

Note: if you double click on any of the pictures you will be transferred to the picture gallery where they will be displayed at half page size Tuesday 13th: Cappadocia here we come! We set off east at 9.35am not sure of how far we would progress in the direction of Cappadocia, our destination some 500 miles / 800 kms / to the east in central Turkey. The first stage was along the D400 coastal highway which we had travelled previously, then after 50 miles /80 kms we turned away from the coast road and headed into the mountains on the D350 which is known as the Inland Route from Fethiye (a major town on the coast) to Antalya one of the major cities on the southern seaboard of Turkey. After an exhilarating drive through spectacular ... read more
