3rd/4th Feb 2020 Goreme, Cappadocia The Green Tour! There are three tours you can do at any one of the hundred tour agencies in the little town of Goreme. Red, Green and Blue. We opted for green and today we travelled around 250 kms to visit some spectacular sights. The Derinkuyu underground city: These cave cities were originally excavated around 1700 BC, and are as deep as 85m! That's almost 4000 years old! They believe they were built to withstand attacks rather than be permanent dwellings, but they contained all of the usual rooms found in a normal city - stables, storage rooms, kitchens, wineries, studies and churches. The extensive network of passages and tunnels and inclined corridors linked family rooms and communal spaces where people would meet, work and worship. Corridors could be quickly blocked ... read more

28th/29th Feb 2020 Antalya As planned, we just took it easy this past two days, catching up on laundry, sleep and walking miles and miles around the city and the old town. This is a really pretty town with a really positive vibe, and it has real Melbourne weather - raining one minute, sunshine the next. We are heading for Cappadocia tomorrow morning on the 7.30am Kamil Koc bus. I'm not sure what made me look for the bus route online, but I did. The bus on this route only leaves twice a day, every day. For some reason, I can't see the bus we are travelling on. It's showing a shedule for the night bus but not the morning bus...... our bus. Perhaps its booked up now. Perhaps its not a real bus. Perhaps I'm ... read more

Another new year, another ski trip, that's just how it has commenced each new year seemingly since time immemorial. So, when a variety of skiable nations have already been visited, it is time for Turkey to step forward and try and prove to the masses just how much this nation, normally associated with resort holidays, measures up on the ski destination scale. Before we get to those details, however, it is worth noting that on this occasion, the accommodation was not right at the ski resort itself, but instead at the nearby industrialized Turkish city of Kayseri, a sizeable city with a fair few traces of development to place it within a category of cities possessing roughly one of everything. Staying at the city's prime property, the Radisson Blu hotel constituted a lap of luxury approach ... read more

Ich habe u.a. Auch hier durfte man ohne Eintritt ... read more

I’ve given my wife a lot of blank looks over the years but when she told me we were off to Goreme for a holiday I had to dig deep into my repertoire of bemused expressions. I settled for a bland gaze with my eyes twitching quizzically to the left and right. Then I did some research. Goreme is a small town in the Cappadocia region of central Turkey. It is ‘famous’ for; developing the Christian Doctrine of the Trinity, inspiring the set of Star Wars ‘A New Hope’, picturesque cave houses and hotels carved into the rock of the landscape, and over thirty cities dug underground over 1000 years ago capable of hiding 20 000 people with provisions and livestock. Quite a set of achievements, I guess the place deserves to be more famous. ... read more

Sadly we are leaving the natural wonders of Cappadocia behind today, with another long drive, this time heading towards Darende, but more of that later. First we are having an early morning visit to the Goreme Open Air Museum (hoping to avoid the crowds). The Open Air Museum is a must see if you're in the area. It's a UNESCO world heritage site and it's easy to see why as we begin to look around this huge site housing a large number of 10th, 11th and 12th century refectory monasteries carved out of the rocks, many of which are highly decorated with religious paintings. As we enter the open air museum, on our left is what's known as the 'nunnery'. It's a 7 storey building with a kitchen, dining hall and other rooms, along with a ... read more

Stumbling out of bed at 4.45am in a cold cave is a surreal experience. I am in Cappadocia, in Turkey, staying in a cave hotel and about to take my first ever hot air balloon ride and an early morning is required in order to see the sun rise. Personally I'm not that fussed about sunrises and would rather have an extra few hours in bed, but nevertheless we are picked up by the ballooning company's minibus and a bleary-eyed group keeps fingers crossed that the wind conditions will be ok to fly (or float - not sure what term you use for hot air balloons). It seems our minibus driver is a rally cross wannabe as we race past other trundling buses at break neck speed, dust flying up behind us, tyres screeching. We are ... read more
