Turkeeeey!

Alright so I arrived in Turkey last Thursday. It was quite an experience walking into the airport in Istanbul, talk about a meeting of two cultures. There were Turkish women wearing tank-tops and Turkish women walking around in Burqas (spelling?). What a contrast. I finally made it into Ankara and waltzed into the embassy around 5 oclock. Everyone was pretty shocked that I had the resourcefullness to figure my way out there, because apparently my supervisors were supposed to arrange things for me. They didn't. Oh well. I made it to the apartment and met with the other interns who are all really really nice. The apartment that we're staying in is wonderful because it's big with all of the appliances that I'm used to (aka washer and dryer which Becca's apartment in Turkey definitely did not have). Whew, thank god for that. Driving into Ankara, I was amazed at how much more prosperous it looked in comparison to Greece. There's a lot of new building going on, mostly of apartments, which is pretty much what all the Turks live in. The countryside is beautiful with rolling green hills all around the city. I don't know what people were saying when they called the countryside barren, because it is definitely not that. Ankara is really just like most cities that I've been in, I actually feel safer here than I did in Greece. Take that! All you people back home that told me I was crazy for going to Turkey lol. We went to Istanbul immediately on Friday evening and I'll write about that in the next post. One comment actually, all around Ankara (and Greece was worse) there are stray animals everywhere. We were advised to watch out for wild packs of dogs, and if we came across any to raise our hands like we were going to beat them with a stick or throw a rock at them because apparently that's what the Turks do. Good thing PETA isn't here to see that.
