Background: Lebanon has made progress toward rebuilding its political institutions since 1991 and the end of the devastating 15-year civil war. Under the Ta'if Accord - the blueprint for national reconciliation - the Lebanese have established a more equitable political system, particularly by giving Muslims a greater say in the political process while institutionalizing sectarian divisions in the government. Since the end of the war, the Lebanese have conducted several successful elections, most of the militias have been weakened or disbanded, and the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) have extended central government authority over about two-thirds of the country. Hizballah, a radical Shia organization, retains its weapons. During Lebanon's civil war, the Arab League legitimized in the Ta'if Accord Syria's troop deployment, numbering about 16,000 based mainly east of Beirut and in the Bekaa Valley. Damascus justified its continued military presence in Lebanon by citing Beirut's requests and the failure of the Lebanese Government to implement all of the constitutional reforms in the Ta'if Accord. Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon in May 2000, however, encouraged some Lebanese groups to demand that Syria withdraw its forces as well. The passage of UNSCR 1559 in early October 2004 - a resolution calling for Syria to withdraw from Lebanon and end its interference in Lebanese affairs - further emboldened Lebanese groups opposed to Syria's presence in Lebanon. Syria finally withdrew the remainder of its forces from Lebanon in April of 2005.

Inget storskaligt fiske i Byblos

Beirut
Beirut
Scars of the war in the city buildings. Maybe the new building is like the old ones now.
We don't know if it’s good or bad to have been there just two weeks before everything started again. From one side we could visit the country, but by the other side we know that what we have seen doesn't exist anymore. Beirut really impressed us, a modern city with modern buildings just beside old bombed ones (scars of the war). The city is really western looking with a touch of Arabic culture. At the same time you can have a coffee in the Star Bucks Cafe, you can smoke a water pipe in the other side of the street. Going [View Full Entry]

Hard Rock Cafe, Beirut

So our saviour wished us as he waved us off after showing us where we had taken a wrong turn. In the suburbs to the east of central Beirut, the lingua franca of many of it's inhabitants is french (arabic ıs reserved for speakıng to the servants and the hoi polloi), and in Gemmeyzeh where we lived, one could be forgiven for mistaking it for a Parisienne quarter in France. Walkıng through the area, we would come across old women natterıng to each other ın French across theır geranıums, hıp young women talking ınto theır cellphones at top speed - [View Full Entry]

20th February, Beirut We arrived in Beirut last night just in time for the pension's rooftop BBQ hosted by the owner/manager, Michel. A nice introduction to the city even if we were not quite in party mode after our 8 hour journey from Damascus. Another one of those whatshouldhavebeenastraightforward150kmjourney which turned into something not so straightforward afterall. We are learning fast that all stress-free and successful travelplans dependent on public transport in these regions will do well to factor in what we call the "insha-allah" (God Willing) element. Forget bus tim [View Full Entry]

The Cedars
The Cedars
The legendary/biblical 'Cedars of Lebanon' - they are truly impressive in terms of size, just a shame theres so few of them........
Lebanon is a beautiful country with lush green snow capped mountains rising virtually straight out of the glinting blue sea. At least that's how it looked on our ride from the border down the coast into Tripoli - the second city of the modern state and an ancient Phoenican city to boot. It didn't look so nice with constant pouring rain, grey skies and small lakes eveywhere as a result of the somewhat poor city drainage system. But with many of the buildings still in a state of semi-ruin and even those that aren't riddled with bullet holes and shell damage [View Full Entry]

The bus ride to Beirut was pretty straight forward, a problem at the Syrian departures for me because I didn't have a exit card. I wasn't given one when I left Turkey. I was fined 1 Syrian pound. There was a English/Syrian guy sitting behind me who said he got fined 75 Syrian pounds once for the same thing, lucky me! The road to Beirut was a long winding one, going downhill into Lebanon's capital city. They dropped me off at a random stop on the outskirts of the city. I was officially lost, I got a minibus to the Charles [View Full Entry]

Apparently Che used to summarize the past month in his diary, so I'll try to do the same about my 2 weeks in Lebanon. This should serve to go some ways towards satisfying those who have requested "a bulleted summary" of where I've been and what I've done. Lebanon is a beautiful country, with mountains seemingly rising right out of the sea, a gorgeous coastline, and great hiking. The people in Beirut are cosmopolitan and indeed one feels like in someplace like America rather than the middle east while in Beirut -- that is, until you notice the bullet holes in [View Full Entry]

Last tuesday I stumbled across a farmers' market in Beirut, and a girl (Aurelia) at one of the stalls explained what was going on and then gave me her phone number and said she would be happy to show me around Jounieh if I was interested. A couple nights later I called her up; she had just arrived at Beirut and was going to hang out with some of her friends, and invited me to come along. So I went (she picked me up) and had an awesome night: it's been ages since I had full (interesting) conversations with cool people [View Full Entry]
