Background: Lebanon has made progress toward rebuilding its political institutions since 1991 and the end of the devastating 15-year civil war. Under the Ta'if Accord - the blueprint for national reconciliation - the Lebanese have established a more equitable political system, particularly by giving Muslims a greater say in the political process while institutionalizing sectarian divisions in the government. Since the end of the war, the Lebanese have conducted several successful elections, most of the militias have been weakened or disbanded, and the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) have extended central government authority over about two-thirds of the country. Hizballah, a radical Shia organization, retains its weapons. During Lebanon's civil war, the Arab League legitimized in the Ta'if Accord Syria's troop deployment, numbering about 16,000 based mainly east of Beirut and in the Bekaa Valley. Damascus justified its continued military presence in Lebanon by citing Beirut's requests and the failure of the Lebanese Government to implement all of the constitutional reforms in the Ta'if Accord. Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon in May 2000, however, encouraged some Lebanese groups to demand that Syria withdraw its forces as well. The passage of UNSCR 1559 in early October 2004 - a resolution calling for Syria to withdraw from Lebanon and end its interference in Lebanese affairs - further emboldened Lebanese groups opposed to Syria's presence in Lebanon. Syria finally withdrew the remainder of its forces from Lebanon in April of 2005.

Woke up to a massive storm. Which was good cause the flu had a tight grip on me. Even the Spidey dance couldnt lift my spirits. Passed in and out of sleep all day. Woke up to see Spider had a new friend. They were going out and Spider was getting numerous fashion tips. An adjusted belt (it must hang loose) and adjusted pants (they must hang over the shoes) this went on to my quiet amusment. Fell asleep to the roaring wind of the med and my lungs. Suxs to be sick. Next day tried to ride up the mountains. [View Full Entry]

The morning started in an odd fashion. Yours truly was feeling a bit fluish. So Kris being the champ he is decided to take it upon himself to cook up some eggs for breakfast. This was to preceed a rather odd event. Read on..... I layed in bed thinking of what amazing concocution Kris was preparing (would it be the omelete of the century? eggs benedict? or something untill this time unknown to man). I waited in anticipation looking at the peeling paint on our 4 by 4 metre dogbox room. I heard a faint murmur from the kitchen 'Kahleed what [View Full Entry]

NYE in Beruit. This had been our goal and we had finally made it. So of course a couple of ciders were due. We had a few celebratory drinks on the terrace of our new digs. The terrace being much more preferable than the room. Kahlid the Jordanian hotel manager joined us for a few and listened to our tunes. Good guy but a touch high strung. Off we ventured into the night. Roadies in hand, hey were Australian. We cruised over to the main bar and club strip in Beruit. We were told previously that it was too far to [View Full Entry]

Saddled up in the morning like a pair of caffenated olympic cyclists. Rode and rode and rode. The riding was quite good going. The Med spread past my head and onto the horizon. It was a deep blue colour, gentle soft waves lapping aginst the rocky shoreline. I was definately savouring the feeling of my legs pumping along like two little Thomas the Tank Engines. Choo choo choo. After a bit I found Spider in a ditch. He had crashed a bit. Was now more brown than before. Poor fella. Stopped for lunch. Met Saed, a helpful man he did proove [View Full Entry]

Punched out of Tartous with the wind behind our backs and a desire to get to Lebanon to see what there is to be seen. We rode along close to the Med Coast and were very much enjoying the sun and easy terrain. We stopped at a small Syrian town for some lunch and were promptly mobbed by about a dozen kids. So much for a quiete bite to eat. After feeling like a spectical we saddled up and hit the Syrian/Lebanese border. The crossing was pretty easy. The Lebanese guys even gave us a 1 month visa for free (beter [View Full Entry]

D'you like the look of our swish hotel? Thought I'd push the boat out and treat wee Jules to some 5-star luxury, the gaping holes were good for catching the sea breeze during the balmy nights.... Most buildings in Beirut are pocked from the long civil war of the 70s and 80s but there's surprisingly scarce evidence of the recent conflict unless you venture into the Hezbollah-dominated suburbs in the southside; if you'd been hibernating you'd never know that Israel and Hezbollah had had a right square go. There are loadsa UN troops kicking about though, choppers regularly flying by and [View Full Entry]

Thursday afternoon after school was over 11 of us set out for Beirut. The trip didn't get very far because when we got to the bus station Erin had forgotten to switch her passport when she changed bags right before she left. So, Erin and Ashanti stayed behind and got the passport and came a little later. The trip hit another snagp at the border Dragana was not allowed into Lebanon because of her Bosnian passport. She had to get in a cab and head back to Damascus while the rest of us continued on. After another little hang up of [View Full Entry]
