Job Thanks for the interest D. I work directly in the re-construction project here,as a civilian. I can't say too much more than that for obvious security reasons.
About 90% of our workforce are locally hired and I have good relations with our blokes. Iraqis are warm hearted and generous people, although they do have very different approaches to our western ideals of personal property and work ethic!
Presently I am living on a coalition base which is the safest option, although I have lived in small towns in and with our Iraqi hosts in houses provided by them. This was better for two reasons - no silly military rules and such, and we got to meet Iraqis relaxed in their home environments, their hospitality is second to none.
Important work Wow, that's important work to be sure, good for you for doing it!
I'm actually going to be in Iraq in a couple of months for a few weeks. Doing some volunteer work with a peace-initiative NGO.
Others who have worked for the organization say the same thing as you do about the local's hospitality.
Nervous but looking forward to the opportunity. Learning to tie my Hijab and pick up a few words of Arabic... (:
I've bookmarked your blog here...
Stay safe!

Good Luck That's good that you're going to be in Iraq, that way you can make your own mind up about what's going on here without the distorting lens of the international media circus. The only advice I can give you is - please make sure whoever is sending you out here is providing adequate security cover, preferably an experienced private security firm. Other than that - enjoy it, it is a place you'll never forget. Regards - Steve
Hey Steve,
The organization does take security seriously. Yes, seeing it for real, outside media circus is part of the purpose of going. Hopefully also to carry that vision back here, and get others to have a glimpse too. Thanks so much for the whet your appitite photos! They worked.
