Background: Bahrain's small size and central location among Persian Gulf countries require it to play a delicate balancing act in foreign affairs among its larger neighbors. Facing declining oil reserves, Bahrain has turned to petroleum processing and refining and has transformed itself into an international banking center. The new amir, installed in 1999, has pushed economic and political reforms and has worked to improve relations with the Shi'a community. In February 2001, Bahraini voters approved a referendum on the National Action Charter - the centerpiece of the amir's political liberalization program. In February 2002, Amir HAMAD bin Isa Al Khalifa proclaimed himself king. In October 2002, Bahrainis elected members of the lower house of Bahrain's reconstituted bicameral legislature, the National Assembly.

Once again, I found myself in Bahrain... but now visiting not only Shawn, Augusta, and Kai... but also Quinn, my newest niece. She is a very cute baby. We are still trying to figure out which features she got from her mom and which from her dad. She definitely has Shawn's feet and fingernails. But she also looks a lot like Augusta did as a baby. The last trip in April it was hot (but not Bahrain summer hot). This time it started out very chilly -- I was told by one of the locals that it was the coldest he [View Full Entry]

This trip is the first time I have ever travelled out of the United States. All of my children and grandchildren travelled to a foreign country before I did! Although I am an adventurer at heart, I must admit I was anxious about going on this trip. It had been over twenty years since I'd flown commercially, and the thought of being on a large crowded airplane for seven hours at a stretch was what I dreaded most. As it turned out, the flying was fine. And when I thought about how people used to cross the Atlantic on ships that [View Full Entry]

Although I stayed in this small island country for only two days, it was a rewarding one. I was staying in downtown Manama, which is busy place with a souq selling gold. In day 2, I went to visit the excellent National Museum of Bahrain, which had a detailed introduction of the history of the country. Knowing only the minimal before I arrived, I was surprised to find that the island had a history of over 3000 years, starting from the ancient Dilmun civilisation, through the Tylos era, to the modern times. It is quite amazing because one could find such [View Full Entry]

I got off to a great start by trying to take a picture of the plane before we boarded - they yelled at me. I am sure all the real spies had their cameras hidden... And then the voyage here was so long. From 8:30 am Paris time when I left for CDG until 14:30 Bangkok time when I arrived at the hotel it was 25 hours, 6 of which were spent hanging around the boring Bahrain airport. I must say I am disappointed with Gulf Air - we had a three hour delay in Bahrain and didn't even get a [View Full Entry]

Today, we went to swim with a beluga whale! His name is Senja (not sure about the spelling, and it is short for Simone, I think, but it is the equivalent of Simon in Russian). So, he is a Russian whale. The place was a big indoor area used for dolphin shows, but only the trainer and a few other people were on hand. Shawn was the first to go and hopped down into the chilly water. Senja was waiting beside the edge. Thin instructor, Alexander, spoke very little English. Shawn put his hands on Senja’s front fins, leaned back a [View Full Entry]

Today… I wore jeans. :) To start out the tour of the Grand Mosque, Augusta had to change into an abaya and we had to take off our shoes. They also gave us some juice while we waited for our tour guide. Ezra was our tour guide. She was very friendly (as was everyone there that we met or came across). The Grand Mosque (as all mosques in Bahrain) was built and continues to be funded by the Bahrain government. The mosque was built with materials all over the world… Italy, Canada (I think), and other countries. Its capacity is 7,000 [View Full Entry]

Augusta, Kai, and I started out the day by going to the Grand Mosque. However, the Grand Mosque does not allow visitors in that are wearing shorts. So, we put this off for another day. We then went to the mall to grab a bite to eat. After that we headed off to the Souq to pick up my suit. When we got to the little shop I tried on the jacket and it fit very well. Everyone at the shop was very friendly. Also, they said that should I want to order another suit, I just need to tell them [View Full Entry]

18th April. I get up early for my 4am transfer to the airport and am a little worried as when i tried to call yesterday to confirm the flights the number wouldn't go through and i assumed that the same thing would happen like in Bangkok. Whilst checking in my worrying increased as they told me to wait as they had to check something. My travel agent at home had also told me that i should buy an onward ticket leaving turkey before i got there otherwise they might not let me in the country. Anyways they come back and give [View Full Entry]

Today we went horseback riding along the beach. Kai stayed with Teresa (their Sri Lankan maid). The horseback ride started out at The Country Club. Before the ride, we spent about 30 minutes walking around the club and waiting. We also got to meet a camel. The day was sunny and hot, maybe 90 to 95 degrees (which isn't that bad, here, as in the summers it can get above 120 degrees). When the previous tour came back, we (and a few other Americans from the base) got saddled up and started the tour going through a neighborhood. My horse didn't [View Full Entry]

Today we went to the Al-Areen Wildlife Park and Reserve and also the beach! :) It was hot and sunny again... around 95 degrees. On the drive out (maybe 25 mins.) we passed the Formula One circuit race track, the horse race track, the king's palace, and ancient burial grounds. At the wildlife park, before taking the bus tour, we walked around the entrance grounds and looked at various ducks, flamingos, and goats. The tour bus took as on a loop around the refuge. We saw ostriches, numerous goats, deer, and gazelles, as well as giraffe. I think they were all [View Full Entry]
