Had a few days in Bahrain on the way home...hot, bright and at least the photos were sharp again in the sunshine. It's certainly livlier than Abu Dhabi! Kate and I had to wear chaddors and scarves to visit the biggest mosque and our hotel was the ony place to get a drink (alcohol, anyway) in the area - and I was desperate for a drink after the antibiotic and kill Bill the amoeba pills I'd had to take - generally, it was friendly and pleasant - if a bit formal and slightly sterile... All the area we stayed in at the top of the island is built on reclaimed land, so my little dream of swimming in the 'sea' was ammended to swimming in the lagoon and we were apparently lucky to have that - ... read more

Hey there! Well we arrived in Bangkok safe and sound after a 16 hour flight , we did stop at Bahrain for about 4 hours first which was surreal at 5am in the morning, there was a singing reindeer head in the airport belting out classic Elvis Presley songs! It was even more weird when the eyes and antlers started moving as well, I was staring at it for ages thinking god I’m truly jet lagged! When we eventually boarded the plane I slipped into a mini coma as soon as my bum hit the seat, I awoke when I drooled on my arm, classy I know lol! Craig then informed me that shortly after take off a fight had erupted between 4 passengers! Apparently it was really heated and they were throwing fists at each ... read more

We arrived in Bahrain (small island country off the coast of Saudi Arabia) at 2am one night after a 7 hour flight (delayed again!). Flying over India, Dubai and Myanmar was great, although take off was intense amidst a thunderstorm with lightning strikes every 10 seconds for at least an hour. At 2am, walking off the plane all dazed and tired, we realized it was kinda hot. 43C in fact. Waking up the next day in our cheap hotel we looked out the window into the nearby buildings and realized: we are in the desert! White houses, flat, sandy landscape and mosques were very different sights to Asia. We hired a car our first day (spending half the time learning to drive on the right) and circum-navigated the island. Very intense! At one stage the temperature ... read more

So..... since i have been here i have not been publishing to many blogs. Despite the great responses i normally enjoy and repeated requests to write, WritE, WRITE!!!, i have not been able to sit down and type about my experience here. I could not figure out why this was such a problem until i had a conversation with my father. I realized, after our talk, that there are two things holding me back. First i realized that so many of my stories come from dialog. After i have told someone a story it is a million times easier to sit down and make my story even more granderrerererr. Without this dialog i lose the motivation to sit down and type. The other(and i think more important)reason, i will try to explain using plugs. Interested?........ then ... read more

This one will be short and quick but i thought everyone should know whats going on. We played Friday night for a chance to go to the finals. Our opponent was the only team that we had not beaten and the guys had a bad history of falling apart against them. Diego and I had talked before the match and came to the conclusion that it was going to be up to us if we were to win. The first set went to us mainly because of Diego's play. The second set was a sea-saw battle and when the score hit 19-19 Diego went up for a block and came down hard on the opponents foot. He immediately collapsed and began to yell in pain. I have been around this sport for a long time now ... read more

Well, what a good start. 36 hours into my journey and I should have been sampling the delights of Kathmandu by now. But no - I've spent the last 17 hours and counting waiting for a plane in the wonderful surrounds of Bahrain airport!! You can't drink ( unless you did what I did, which was buy duty free vodka and mix it with your McDonalds Coke), the food choice is basically McDonalds - or next door the middle east version - McDonalds Halal style!! - great!!! Well, not a lot else to say yet - Hopefully Kathmandu here I come, but after 2 days of virtually no sleep I'm beginning to wonder Why am I doing it!! My plan was to give up smoking when I reached Nepal - so today I've been a 60 ... read more

Hello all We are just sitting here in the airport of Bahrain. We arrived last night because we could not get direct to Cairo and our flight is not delayed, oh the joys of travelling. I thought that I would take the time to write a quick little note. The blog for Nepal is written, but on my computer and very long...we had a great time. One thing that I was going to mention and haven't so far was the transportation aspects. In the game, there is a secondary contest for the team that can use the most forms of transportation. Mom and I have decided to pursue that route. So far we have travelled on a camel, donkey, elephant, car, bus, taxi, airplane, rickshaw, trishaw, wheel barrel, cable car, street car, canoe, and jeep...to name ... read more

So i see its been 23 days since my last blog. I wish i could say that i've been out experiencing new things and thus to busy to write. Alas the opposite has been true. Since my last blog the days have been vanishing in mundane daily habits with only a few hiccups to break the monotony. This has not been completely unhelpful though as i have been able to focus on my rehab and physical shape. Sorry mom i still haven't gained any weight but my knee is doing well and the rest of my body feels as good as it has in a long time. The hiccups i speak of were two events; one was a concert that featured a Queen tribute "band" and the other was the Bahrain F1 Grand Prix. Ill start ... read more

We took a day in lieu from Bovis Lend Lease on Sunday and went off to the Grand Prix in Bahrain for the day. It was really quite a wonderful day. A big group of friends from Dubai went with us (the usual suspects - Jessie, Rod, Leanne, Steve, Sascha, Linda, Dave and I). We bought our tickets to the grand prix over the internet with a company called dream days. They were actually really good and we got a great day on the flights and grand prix tickets. We caught a plane up to Bahrain on the Sunday morning and were met at the airport by the dreamdays people who put us into a bus to the grand prix track. The only slight hitch in the day was the bus ride, as it decided to ... read more

First let me start with a quick note to everyone out there. Thank you all for your positive comments and notes on some of my stories. While i may not get the chance to reply to all of them I want you all to know what a joy it is when I log on and see that my blogs are well received. So thank you all and please keep the comments coming. Now without further ado. Many people have been asking me what the locals do here for fun. Up until a couple weeks ago the only response I could give was..." I have absolutely NO idea!" When i would ask a guy from my team sometimes the response would be in the order of, "Anything you want" or, "Take a tea," but as far as ... read more
