Background: Bahrain's small size and central location among Persian Gulf countries require it to play a delicate balancing act in foreign affairs among its larger neighbors. Facing declining oil reserves, Bahrain has turned to petroleum processing and refining and has transformed itself into an international banking center. The new amir, installed in 1999, has pushed economic and political reforms and has worked to improve relations with the Shi'a community. In February 2001, Bahraini voters approved a referendum on the National Action Charter - the centerpiece of the amir's political liberalization program. In February 2002, Amir HAMAD bin Isa Al Khalifa proclaimed himself king. In October 2002, Bahrainis elected members of the lower house of Bahrain's reconstituted bicameral legislature, the National Assembly.

Well i can't quite believe i've now been away from the UK for over a year....i left 1st October '07 and will be back in a couple of days, Tuesday 21st '08....so this will be my last blog I've spent the last few weeks in Bahrain at my sisters place. It's very different from Koh Phangan of course, and took me a little while to adjust. I've been used to riding around on my motorbike, going off to the beach on my days off and enjoying the beautiful views of the sea and lush green palm trees....and although there are palm [View Full Entry]

Had a few days in Bahrain on the way home...hot, bright and at least the photos were sharp again in the sunshine. It's certainly livlier than Abu Dhabi! Kate and I had to wear chaddors and scarves to visit the biggest mosque and our hotel was the ony place to get a drink (alcohol, anyway) in the area - and I was desperate for a drink after the antibiotic and kill Bill the amoeba pills I'd had to take - generally, it was friendly and pleasant - if a bit formal and slightly sterile... All the area we stayed in at [View Full Entry]

Hey there! Well we arrived in Bangkok safe and sound after a 16 hour flight , we did stop at Bahrain for about 4 hours first which was surreal at 5am in the morning, there was a singing reindeer head in the airport belting out classic Elvis Presley songs! It was even more weird when the eyes and antlers started moving as well, I was staring at it for ages thinking god I’m truly jet lagged! When we eventually boarded the plane I slipped into a mini coma as soon as my bum hit the seat, I awoke when I drooled [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Bahrain (small island country off the coast of Saudi Arabia) at 2am one night after a 7 hour flight (delayed again!). Flying over India, Dubai and Myanmar was great, although take off was intense amidst a thunderstorm with lightning strikes every 10 seconds for at least an hour. At 2am, walking off the plane all dazed and tired, we realized it was kinda hot. 43C in fact. Waking up the next day in our cheap hotel we looked out the window into the nearby buildings and realized: we are in the desert! White houses, flat, sandy landscape and [View Full Entry]

So..... since i have been here i have not been publishing to many blogs. Despite the great responses i normally enjoy and repeated requests to write, WritE, WRITE!!!, i have not been able to sit down and type about my experience here. I could not figure out why this was such a problem until i had a conversation with my father. I realized, after our talk, that there are two things holding me back. First i realized that so many of my stories come from dialog. After i have told someone a story it is a million times easier to sit [View Full Entry]

This one will be short and quick but i thought everyone should know whats going on. We played Friday night for a chance to go to the finals. Our opponent was the only team that we had not beaten and the guys had a bad history of falling apart against them. Diego and I had talked before the match and came to the conclusion that it was going to be up to us if we were to win. The first set went to us mainly because of Diego's play. The second set was a sea-saw battle and when the score hit [View Full Entry]

Well, what a good start. 36 hours into my journey and I should have been sampling the delights of Kathmandu by now. But no - I've spent the last 17 hours and counting waiting for a plane in the wonderful surrounds of Bahrain airport!! You can't drink ( unless you did what I did, which was buy duty free vodka and mix it with your McDonalds Coke), the food choice is basically McDonalds - or next door the middle east version - McDonalds Halal style!! - great!!! Well, not a lot else to say yet - Hopefully Kathmandu here I come, [View Full Entry]

Hello all We are just sitting here in the airport of Bahrain. We arrived last night because we could not get direct to Cairo and our flight is not delayed, oh the joys of travelling. I thought that I would take the time to write a quick little note. The blog for Nepal is written, but on my computer and very long...we had a great time. One thing that I was going to mention and haven't so far was the transportation aspects. In the game, there is a secondary contest for the team that can use the most forms of transportation. So i see its been 23 days since my last blog. I wish i could say that i've been out experiencing new things and thus to busy to write. Alas the opposite has been true. Since my last blog the days have been vanishing in mundane daily habits with only a few hiccups to break the monotony. This has not been completely unhelpful though as i have been able to focus on my rehab and physical shape. Sorry mom i still haven't gained any weight but my knee is doing well and the rest of my body feels as good as [View Full Entry]

On the surface, the Gulf States are a wealthy land populated by modestly dressed men and women who follow the precepts of Islam and devoutly adhere to the Koran. However, underneath this veneer, there writhes debauchery of a most surprising kind. The initial foray into the Gulf States was Kuwait - which might just have the world’s most inefficient visa-on-arrival system. You would surmise that with the enormous money made from oil, that some funds would have been invested to ensure an efficient airport - but alas no. The situation did not improve upon finally entering the country, fo [View Full Entry]
