Many people are tentative to visit Zimbabwe because of the negative press seen overseas, however it is our opinion that the political situation in Zimbabwe does not make it unsafe for visitors. Having said this, it is wise to not voice disdain for the current government in public, and to stay clear of any political rallies or large gatherings.
The lack of tourism in Zimbabwe over the last 3 years has been seen by some visitors as a stroke of luck as the game parks are free from crowds and the prices of tours are generally very reasonable as operators slash fares in an effort to attract the scarce few.
Some more advice:
Exchange Rate: Officially the government has fixed the exchange rate to US$1 to Z$847.... so that means for one US dollar you will receive 847 Zimbabwe dollars. But there is a very fluid and thriving parallel market or black market (this is how most everyone deals with exchanging money) where you will get at least $1400 for each of your US dollars. So bring CASH ! (TravellerÂ’s cheques are a second option but the rates are not as good)
Credit cards are processed by banks, and so you will get the rate of Z$847
We can direct you on the best way to get the most for your money. Don't be tempted to change on the streets, they offer a good rate, but might turn you into the police, or will steal your money.
Fuel Shortages: There is a serious lack of fuel in Zimbabwe, so if you plan on getting around by car be prepared to have to really work at getting fuel, either in long queues (by this it can be several hours to several days) or on the black market where you will pay a premium, and it is not always easy to find. There are buses and trains between most places and we can give you advice on how to book your travel plans.
