Hi. Does anybody know any hotel at Tambunan, Sabah, Malaysia - just about anything will do, I just need it to sleep there after coming down from the Crocker Range and before going to Ranau next morning? I know about the Borneo Heritage Village (formerly known as the Tambunan Village Resort Center) but it is somewhat inconveniently located out of the town wit its access to public transport.

Besides. I have read about bad shape of road from Tambunan to Ranau. Does anybody know about current situation of this road with respect to the public buses/microbuses going along it? I should be there this August. Thanks.

I say, it would be better for you to get a hotel in the nearest town, Keningau instead of Tambunan. Most of the locals will come down to Keningau (takes around 1 hour from Tambunan's town to reach Keningau's town) to get to the next destination anyway. There are 2 decent hotels in Keningau. Hotel Perkasa and Hotel Juta. Opt for the later since it is located conveniently in front of a mall and coffee shops. There are taxis parking right in front but if you intend to explore the town, its a small area .. everything is within walking distance. Price is around RM100 - 200 depending on the season. However don't count on me the price might have gone up.

As for the road to Ranau from Keningau or Tambunan, it is all depends on the the weather. If it's been raining cats & dogs for a week, I suggest you take the longer route (Keningau - Tambunan - Kota Kinabalu - Tampaluri - Ranau ... 5 hours give & take) but it will be safer. If you would rather risk it, I say travel during the day and if possible use 4X4 type of transportation. This road is frequently used by lorries and small size motorist alike.

Personally, this road is not that dangerous except for the occasional landslide and road collapse during rainy season. I wouldn't hesitate to use this road if the day is fine and I've got a driver who knew well about this road. Hope you will have an adventurous journey while u are in Borneo.

Hi dstaceys, thanks for the reply. In the meantime I have found email address of the Tambunan Village Resort Center and contacted them - their information was that in August the transport should be runing and they offered to book us the seatrs and made the bus to pick us up at the TVRC. So everything seems to be settled.
