solaris mette jensen Post Count: 2 Msg: #1 87 days ago, April 28th 2008 | We are taking a "career break" for 6-9 months - children are 8 and 11 years old (2nd and 5th grade). Budget 10.000£. We start from Denmark - or Germany. | We have thought of the following (time of year: NOVEMBER-JULY): India - not too overpowering.... By the sea some of the time Cambodia - Ankor Watts, Nam Song river - is this a good idea? Vietnam - Halong Bay, Sliding down sand dunes- Mui Ne Indonesia Bali - kuta, Ubud Thailand - specific sights/route? Not too touristic Australia - meeting friends/family for one month Dreams: - volunteering for a 4 weeks. preferably starting off the trip, but without paying high fees (teaching English, doing chores, children, whatever.... Do you know any places that would accept a family? Of course we will contribute with money as we both would not work at the same time) - staying in a bungalow on a beach - doesn't have to be empty. Length: 1 month. Maybe doing it twice during our trip? - travelling - staying for a min. of 1 week, two weeks, three weeks - travelling again - whitewater rafting - orangutangs - 1/3 of the time spent in big cities (but which ones?) - adventure - but still safe with children - not too many indoor museums, but a few would be nice - accommodation: modest but clean and safe. Guesthouses OK :-) - once (or twice :-): a luxury stay at a luxury hotel - without paying through the nose.... - interesting train rides - interesting boat trips/rides - interesting bus rides - not too many flights Questions: How would the "perfect" itenerary look like? (Flights, overland routes).... How about the budget - is that OK? What is the cost of one night for a family (I can only find prices for double rooms in guides).... for each of the countries? And food now the prices have gone up? Any help will be highly appreciated!!! It will probably be our one and only time to go so far, so we would like it to be memorable :-) Mell Mel Fla Post Count: 2699 Msg: #2 87 days ago, April 28th 2008 | Hello Solaris :) | That looks like an amazing journey you are going to do. I went to Thailand with my dauther twice last year for a month each time. We spend each time 500 Euros between us for the month. There are beach huts with double beds available for around 4 Euros per night. You could get one for you and your partner to share and one for the kids. The one we stayed in was on Ao Cholok Lam beach on Koh Pha Ngan. Walk onto the beach from the village and turn right and walk for around 5 minutes until you get to Sarisa Place. Sarisa Place has nice bungalows and so does the place to the right of it. The bungalows are right beside the beach and a good place to spend a few weeks of beach time. You could also stay near the Khao Sok National park. There is a place there called Garden Huts which has 3 wooden bungalows. They are doubles and cost around 4 Euros per night each. Also you could visit Kanchanaburi if you are interested in Word War 2 history. Stay at the Blue Star Guest House. That has double bungalows from 4 Euros per night too. Not too far from Kanchanaburi at the Burmese border is the Dada Childrens home where you can volunteer. It costs a few Euros per day to stay there and you can volunteer skills from helping the kids with their English, to playing games with them, to working in the Organic garden. It is home of many Burmese single mothers who would have very few options for survival if this place did not exist. I think they would take families. Their website is Neohumanist Foundation I did not stay there so cant comment on exactly what it is like. You could also visit Pai in the North of Thailand and sleep in a tree house for a few Euros per night. I have not been there yet but it is on my list of places I want to go to. In Bangkok you could stay in a guesthouse for a few Euros per night for a double room. It would be safe enough if your kids have a separate room next to yours.Riding up and down the river on the passanger boat provides nice inexpensive entertainment. The only other country on your list that I have been to is India. Last time I was there I was alone but I will be going there next December with my boyfriend and daugher(7 years old). If you go there before I do it would be great if you would let me know what it was like with a family. Also what the other places are like for kids. I will possibly be going to them with mine some time in the hopefully not too distant future. Hopefully someone who is good with making itineries will post on this thread. :) I am not much good at that. If you find anything out it would be great if you could keep me posted!! | Also it looks like we may be in the same places at the same time so it would be good to hear about your experiences on the rouad etc and maybe meet up if your kids want a playmate! Have a great trip! solaris mette jensen Post Count: 2 Msg: #4 60 days ago, May 25th 2008 | Thank you for your very specific tips :-) It makes it easier! | I have actually found a place, http://www.travelfish.org/ , and I'm thinking of trying to build an itinerary from this, however, all prices are for one person only and there are no thoughts for kids....
