And there is not a city nor village that does not have its own special festival, mostly held in the summertime, and replete with feasting and drinking. Indeed, this region has refined culinary traditions that defy the imagination with its free-range meats, fishes, smoked sausages and varieties of vegetables all accompanied by the unrivalled in quality local wines. | By boat, by train, by car, discover the heart of this region with a tour up the Douro valley. In its upper reaches, halt and enjoy the inspiring landscapes that have been carved out by human hand to produce the vine terraces to grow the grapes that result in port. Already recognised as World Heritage, the demarcated port region is of a beauty that genuinely justifies the term - unforgettable. After an earthquake destroyed most of the city in 1755, Lisbon was rebuilt around one of Europe's most beautiful piazzas: the Praca do Comercio, dominated by the equestrian statue of King Jose. the alfama district was practiccally the only one surviving intact, and so kept it's ancient atmosphere. The area surrounding the Praca do Comercio is called Baixa. Immediately to the north is the old Rossio Square. Much of this area is now a pedestrian zone, with metro links, as well as plenty of outdoor cafes and shops. if you want to visit lisbon, and specially alfama, there is a small place aimed for backpackers called the lazy crow, right in the middle of alfama. | [Edited: 18:34 - andywanderer ] Sunnysidehotel Sunnyside Hotel Post Count: 2 Msg: #3 12 days ago, October 2nd 2008 | I have never been to Lisbon before but i have been to Porto which is not too far away.
