Hey. I'm looking for any information about travel in Laos from the Chinese border. I will be going to Laos this June. I hear it is not exactly a good time to go, but it's the only free time I have. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,
I travelled into Laos from China in November 2006. It was pretty straightforward, although the border formalities took a while to complete. A bus goes from Mengla in Yunnan straight to Luang Namtha. It's a good base to go trekking from (head to Muang Sing), or to head south. The bus to Vientiane goes via Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng, taking 26 hours. It's easy to continue south to Pakse on the "King Of Bus" - very modern, comfy buses with a/c (take some warm clothes!). You'll need to change buses there to continue to the 4000 Islands and the Cambodian border at Stung Treng.
My blog might give you some more details - but let me know if you have any questions.
Cheers,
Andy

Hi Jeremy,
Sorry, meant to add that! Here you go: http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Laos/Muang-Sing/blog-105304.html
The bus is actually 23 hours from Luang Namtha to Vientiane - typo.
Hope the blog helps. I'd go back to Laos at the drop of a hat... .
Cheers,
Andy
