You could try going the same route as OZ bus takes. They are experienced with this overland trip so the route they take is probably the safest one. Their London to Sydney trip takes them 3 months so it may take you around that much time too. Also in case you dont realise, you will need visas for many of the countries you would go through. You are not taking the easy option but I would love to do it like you are too. It would give one a real perspective on just how big the world is. Now, you can start to head down by train/car/buses as low as Egypt. The tricky part by road with kids is between Egypt and India, as well as from India to Thailand...so you could do a mix of land and sea....that's going to be an amazing trip...and whynot come back the other way...cruises do exist from Australia to Hawai, than on to US East Coast...than from NY to England!
