They also provides a different less touristy feel to the experience of being there. But watch out for big agency fees - better to book direct with owners. Also, make sure you're not ending up in a back street in an out of the way area, away from the Metro. There's a good value apartment just round the corner from the Arc de Triomphe. Close to the Metro and RER and near the Air France airport shuttle coach stop.
