How much money do I need in Australia?

My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to Australia in July and August and would appreciate some advice on how much money we're likely to need. We're going to backpack the East Coast for 5 weeks and have internal flights between Melbourne, Sydney and Cairns. We're probably going to stay in Hostels most of the time but the odd B&B would proabably go down well too!

Thanks for your help... :-)

Click on this link and it will take you to lonely planets cost-guide for Australia:

Lonely Planet Cost Guide - AUS

remember, these costs are in australian dollars, so make sure to convert it to your local currency HERE.

I guess, as with any travel, cost is dependent on how you like to live. If you're on a budget, try to eat at Pubs, not restaurants. Pubs have counter-meals for around $5 at lunch and $12 at dinner. Restaurants will likely cost you more around $15-$20 for a meal.

Don't rule out car-hire and road-tripping some of the country. The drive from Melbourne to Canberra (our capital), and Canberra to Sydney is beautiful. You miss a lot by flying from city to city.

Some notes about the Lonely Planet Link that are a bit off target:
Fuel is currently $1.35 / Litre
Don't Tip anyone - no one expects it
Car hire starts at $35, not $60
Share accomodation in Hostels starts at $20-$40, depending on location
Private room with queen bed and ensuite in Hostel starts at $55-$80, depending on location

Currently, our Aussie Dollar is ridiculously high in value, watch the exchange rates over the next few months, and try to get a better deal closer to your departure date.

** I guess as a rough guide, you'll maybe spend $80-$150 a day? Like I said, it really depends on how you like to live. If you like to do activities that cost nothing, like hiking and stuff, you'll be in the lower range of $. If you're more about shopping and adventure tours, you'll pay more.
