whye Jason Chong Post Count: 2 Msg: #1 115 days ago, April 2nd 2008 | I am planning to spend 7-10days in Italy with my friend. We are student and we do not have much saving. I would like to travel to some of the famous cities like rome, venice and florence. But i am thinking of going to one or two more places since i heard that venice is a small place and i might only need to spend a day or two there. I would also like to know is there any cheap hostels any of you could recommend? I check through several website and most of them are expensive. Furthermore, would it be easy to travel from one city to another? Could i easily get the train ticket from one place to another? or i should get it in advance? where can i find it? | My initial plan is to travel from Milan - Venice - Florence - Rome. I have no idea how many days should i spend in each of these places. A friend of mine told me Venice is quite a small city and he only spent a night there. But some told me Venice is superb and its worth staying up to 2-3 nights. Any suggestion how many days i should spend in each of these cities? Other that these, any suggestions and recommendation on \"things to do, places to go\" would be welcomed. As this is the first time i will be traveling aboard with friends, i would like to do more preparation and get myself more informed with things that a traveler should know. Recommendation on how to safe by traveling cheaply would be appreciated. I strongly encourage you to visit Florence, Rome and Venice, however, I was not too impressed with Milan. The main place I enjoyed visiting in Milan was the Duomo. | Venice was absolutely incredible. I thoroughly enjoyed my few days there. We actually stayed right outside of Venice in a little town called Malamocco (it's a short varpetto ride across the canal). I would also strongly suggest that you visit the Island of Murano. This is where all the glassblowers were exciled to when they were causing too many fires in Venice. Venice is a very beautiful place. Florence is a very nice place as well. I enjoyed the street markets they host, great for picking up souveniors. There are several areas worth exploring, however I can't think of any off the top of my head. A few I can remember are Piazzale Michelangelo (a great view of the city), Ponte Vecchio, and the Duomo. Rome, of course, is definitely a place you must stop. We had a horrible experience with a hostel there so I can not recommend a place to stay there. Inspite of the awful hostel it was a great few days. I would visit all of the main touristy areas: Colloseum, Pantheon, Spanish Steps, and Vatican City. If you plan on going into Vatican City and St. Peter's that should probably be your first stop of the day because the line becomes ridiculous at open. There are several other areas of interest, but your hotel/hostel should be able to give you a map with all of the noteworthy areas pointed out. Along with these major cities to visit, I also suggest Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre are five fishing villages right on the Italian Riviera. It is absolutely beautiful. We stayed in Riomaggiorre which is a cute little town with gorgeous views and a great beach (small but nice). There are also several hiking paths, if that interests you. If you have any more specific questions, I will try my best to help you out. Italy is a great place. I think you'll really enjoy exploring the country. I know I look forward to returning and making it to a few of the places I didn't have time to stop in. Number of Users: 2 | Number of Posts: 2 | ||||||||||
