I am going to Spain this April vacation with a school group. I am an 18 year old girl. I am allowed one suitcase for checked luggage and one carry on (a regular sized duffel bag) for packing. My question is: what is the best type of thing to bring in order to carry things in it during the day? We will be going all over Spain- Madrid, Granada, Seville, Costa Del Sol, etc. Our teacher told us because of pickpocketing we shouldn\'t bring bags, but I don\'t think that is very practical for me, as I need a bag to hold my camera and glasses, as well as a water bottle. I have one of those security necklace things for my passport and money (are those too much of a hassle? what would you suggest I use for those things?), but I know that I\'ll need some type of purse/bag for walking around. What do you suggest? Obviously I need something that is relatively safe from pickpocketers... I\'ve looked around but am at a loss for what is best. Please help!

The greatest thing I ever did was to buy a Camelback backpacke with a water bladder in it. The 1.5 Liter bag gives you enough water to make it through the day, the straps are comfortable, and its got all the pockets and zips you would ever need.
Pickpockets are everywhere. You just need to be mindful of your things and you wont have a problem. Lean your backpack against the walls in tubes so nobody is behind you, dont walk around looking up or with your face planted in a map, dont keep fumbling through your bag to get your camera and money every 5 seconds (carry some cash in your pocket as well as your camera).
One free bit of advice also, if you don't like cat-calls, walk around looking "confidently pissed", it'll keep the numbers to a minimum. European guys have no mental block between what they think and what they say, haha.
Goodluck.

Do as we locals do: a medium size bag, wearing the strap crossed over your chest (not hanging from one shoulder...)

Hello Michelle :)

I suggest a moneybelt to wear around your waist and under your clothes for your money and passport. You can get one in sports, camping or bag shops. If your camera is small try to put it in an inside pocket of your jacket.
For carrying water etc I would take any small canvas(or other) bag.

I would suggest a "messenger" style bag, so that you can wear it with the bag hanging behind you when it's not crowded. But, when you do get into an area where it's crowded, all you have to do is swing sroud to your side or front. It is also good because it is easier to get into than a backpack. Backpacks have to be pulled off and awkwardly handled to search through to find your belongings. Another positive feature is the fact that they usually have a flap that buckle and/or velcros over the main compartments making it virtually impossible for pickpockets/thieves to get into. There's my input for your daypack.

As far as your checked luggage, well you may not need to check any luggage. If you pack smart enough you should be able to manage all your items into a carry on, and the messenger bag. Seeing that airlines allow 1 carry on, and 1 personal item (messenger bag).

There is an awesome and versatile carry-on the www.rei.com sells. It is the Osprey Porter, and my wife and I love it! We are going traveling around Asia for 9 weeks and all we are bringing is our Osprey Porters and a personal item. Seeing as most people wil buy some clothes while they are in the visited country anyways. This bag is a typical duffel back that fits the airlines carry-on sizes and also discretely converts into a backpack with a waistbelt. Check out the reviews, you will be impressed. Hope this helps!!
