Kia Ora,
I have a fantastic suggestion to make for all travellers to New Zealand: Don't miss out on doing a workshop teaching you either the art of bone carving (possible in Nelson and Christchurch) or harakeke (flax) weaving (in Golden Bay or near Motueka), both located near the top of New Zealand's south island. It's so much fun to be with the artists in their local working studios, and you get to craft your own souvenir while actively developing a new skill on the way! I have heard of these workshops through Creative Tourism New Zealand and wanted to share this much with you. Please let me know once you have done one of these or similar workshops. Do also let me know whether you can recommend any others to me - some that you have heard of, some that you have done already!?!
What I can say for myself is this: Be prepared to venture off the "beaten cultural track" - and get your hands down to real experiences with real Kiwis in their everyday creative environment:) Definitely a hit for people bored of the standard tourist track..!

Hello Pikoura 2008 :)

I have moved this to the Oceania forum, because the people who are travelling to NZ will likely be looking there.

Thanks Mel! That's a good idea. Just had another go at looking up more information about interactive workshops in New Zealand ...might just be worth sharing with other travelers: www.creativetourism.co.nz
