adtraveler adt Post Count: 4 Msg: #1 199 days ago, January 9th 2008 | So, my girlfriend and I were thinking of doing a Greek Mainland + Island trip. We are really into sight-seeing more than the relaxing, beachy stuff (since we are from San Deigo). So here is the cities we thought of covering. Any input on 1. how to get around to these cities (are taxis the quickest/most efficient way?) and 2. on whether we are missing something huge--which is my deepest fear. I keep reading posts and adding places/things I want to do, which is basically creating a never ending trip to greece! | Athens, Olympia, Delphi then I want to go Greek island hopping a little. I thought of hitting up a few big and a few small ones, but I only have two to three days more. So i thought of Santorini and Angistri (I saw pics and the water looked so magnificently blue!!)... so there you have it, any suggestions wud be appreciated! thanks in advance! :) Sorola Matt Sorola Post Count: 41 Msg: #2 196 days ago, January 11th 2008 | If you like sightseeing and are going to only stay in Greece, I'd say go it alone. The islands are very close to each other and there are tons of travel agents in Athens. I used Argonaut Travel, you'll find an address listing here along with some other agencies. | To answer your questions: 1. You'll fly into Athens and you will never need a car, and probably not need one. The metro runs right to the airport for a flat rate (much cheaper than cabs) The Greek mafia still has a very large presence in Greece, so the more you use cabs the more you have a chance of getting ripped off. All the touristy sights are located in or around the Acropolis. I don't know you budget but they are everything from boutique hotels to great hostels around the base. Once there, everything is within a good walk, if you're up to it. Getting around to the islands takes some planning ahead. Use the ferry system, its great. Make sure to take the Fast-ferries there, to get there faster, and the regular ferries back, because the weather can mess with the schedules sometimes. The regular ferries are huge, so weather doesn't cancel them as often. 2. Athens is a sightseeing mecca. Like Rome, there are ancient ruins mixed in amongst the city. Santorini is beautiful and relatively cheap for europe. Great sunsets, would be perfect for you and your girlfriend. Mykonos is kinda more of a party island, but it does have some touristy sightseeing spots. One thing i think you were missing in your list if your into sightseeing is Ephisus, its located on the coast of Turkey. You'll find ruins there that are on par with Pompeii. Tour it yourself and save some money, they are info signs all over the place in English. Lemmi know if you have more questions, i spent alot of time in Greece. -Matt Number of Users: 2 | Number of Posts: 2 | ||||||||||
