As far as volunteer opportunities, my only recommendation would be to NOT volunteer to a religious organization. They tend to be very shallow and they have the wrong motives. Volunteer for an organization that strives to strictly help the locals with no strings attached. Secular organizations like Red Cross, Peace corps, and if you are brave, try the local public hospitals, and if you are even more brave and I would highly advice you to volunteer at an aids hospice.
