I struck out in Puerto Natales. | marpop mary pope Post Count: 2 Msg: #2 163 days ago, January 25th 2008 | Hope this is not too late, but the large hyper mercado(like a super walmart) called Abu Gosch is in downtown Punta Arenas.I did not see any "backpacker meals" but they did have about anything you could ever want.We came from the states and went ahead and brought what we could from home.It made it slightly more difficult packing, but worth it.I will say, being from the states we rely on peanut butter for backpacking and because of FSA regulations you cannot pack it in your luggage any longer, but we looked in every town we went through and not one had any.We finally found a jar at a refugio store inside Torres del Paine.Just be prepared to compromise. | mrayner Michael Rayner Post Count: 3 Msg: #3 163 days ago, January 25th 2008 | Thanks Mary. It was a little late (I'm back home now) but just in case anyone else is looking for freeze-dried foods, there isn't any in Punta Arenas either. You can find it in Santiago, but not down there. The "hypermercado" in the duty free zone in Punta Arenas, as Mary points out, have a lot of good stuff so you can get what you need there, but if you're looking for freeze dried and not going through Santiago, bring it from home. | Good luck to all! mrayner Michael Rayner Post Count: 3 Msg: #4 163 days ago, January 25th 2008 | Thanks Mary! It was too late for me, but just in case anyone clicks on this thread, there isn't any freeze-dried food in Punta Arenas either. As Mary says, the "Hypermercados" in the duty free zone (there are a few) have pretty much anything you might want (except PB, obviously) so you can get what you want there, but no freeze-dried. If you want to take that on a hike, bring it from home or get it in Santiago (I'm told you can find it there, but I didn't try myself). | Good luck all, and thanks for the response Mary.
