Bus-A-Bout or Euro rail pass?

Hi, I will be in Spain next year for 2 months and in that time will also be visiting Spain. This will be my first backpacking experience. I will also be with my boyfriend at the time. I am wondering what is the best way of travel through out Spain and Portugal? I was thinking of doing a bus-a-bout tour through Spain and than making my own way through Portugal as the bus-a-bout does not go through Portugal. I will be doing a bus-a-bout through Germany on my own before meeting my partner so was thinking of just paying for the two loops? But I am now looking more into the Euro rail pass as it will allow more flexibility and goes through Portugal. Is it safe and comfortable or expensive? Any tips or ideas?

I am Spanish and I have crossed Spain by train and by bus and I recommend the 2nd. Spanish trains are quite comfortable and normally don't have big delays (although this being the Peninsula Iberica expect some delays anyway...there's always "maņana").Buses normally have lots of stops in between main stations and are not as comfortable to sleep in. Also I think it will be much cheaper if you buy an euro rail pass for Spain, Portugal and Germany together instead of single bus tickets for each country...Spain is not as cheap as it used to be, but you still can have our great food for 6 euros (go to the bars and have the "menu del dia":starter, main course, salad, dessert and coffee for 6-8 euros!!!) Germany is cheap in the East but not as much in the West, and when we went to Portugal 2 summers ago, we thought it was quite cheap (we live in England, so, most of the times we go to "Europe" is quite cheap!!).
Also in Germany there are special train offers and you can go as far as you can in 1 day for 28 euros, but you have to buy a new ticket everyday. Trains there are great: very comfortable, fast and on time. German people are very, very nice (my boyfriend is german!!) and very helpful, most of them speak english, specially in the West (in Portugal and Spain is going to be more difficult to find someone who speaks english!!)
I hope you have fun and enjoy!!!!
