Ali Ali Watters Post Count: 2814 Msg: #1 304 days ago, October 21st 2007 | When looking for a travel companion - keep in mind the following: (switching on Dad mode) | 1: Keep your details private on the forum - emails, phone numbers etc - everyone can be contacted through their travelblog profile page. 2: Establishing an alter-ego on the internet is very easy - be wary - many people lie about themselves in these situations - and you cannot tell truth from lies in an email. 3: You will get replies to your posts from eager young (male!) tour guides from the places you wish to tour - ignore them completely - moderators will delete their posts in good time. 4: Look for someone similar to your self to travel with - if you are a young female first time traveller - look for another young female traveller - not necessarily a first-timer. It will avoid many complications. 5: You will meet people if you go alone - in almost all countries and all circumstances - book a few nights at a hostel in the destination city - and hangout there until you meet people you like. 6: Check that the person you will be meeting is who they say they are - I suggest a video call over skype for a good first approach. If you send a private message - keep in mind this is not an invitation to stalk someone! - and we will disable accounts where this goes on - persistent messages for no reason. A couple more tips for posting If you post advertising for a travel companion - don't be surprised if you get responses from people outside your specifications - a good way to respond without rejecting someone is along the lines of: "Thanks for the offer - I'm looking for someone specifically my own age (or XYZ criteria) - but if you are in the area when I am - a coffee/juice/beer sometime would be great." You'll meet some interesting people - possibly who live in the area and have a huge amount of travel experience to offer. If at all worried about meeting the person - don't respond or go with a friend from the hostel/hotel or your travel partner.
