To celebrate my fathers 79 birthday. My wife and I are planing to take our two kids (3 and 5) and my both my parents to Portugal for 6-7 days. We would like to visit 3 city's and spend 2 days in each city. We would like to travel by train from city to city and preferably travel in train by night, to take advantage of the day. I know this is not much time but it is all the time we can spare. We plan to arrive in Lisbon on October 24, 2007.

1) What are the 3 Must See city's you recommend?

2) Is there a particular order in which you recommend visiting?
Example: 1st (Porto) 2nd (Averio) and 3rd (Lisbon).

3) Within these citys is there any highlight you recommend seeing.

About ourselves:
In a nut shell, we are fun people. I am afraid to say my parents have more energy than we do. We all love drinking good wine, good food (Sea Food) shopping and ocean views. We love visiting castles, big Churches and sight seeing. I know my kids are pretty young but they love to travel and especially on trains.

Hi, Portugal is a beautiful country to visit but it is not very big and you will not be able to travel by night due to the short distances. I think that Porto - Lisbon only takes 3 -4 hours by train and if you are planning to stop in Aveiro on the way, the train journey is even shorter. Porto and Lisbon are an absolute must and both are stunning cities to visit. If you want to stop in a 3rd city between Lisbon and Porto, I would choose Coimbra instead of Aveiro as there is not a lot to see in Aveiro.

However, 2 days are not enough for Lisbon, especially if you want to visit Sintra and Cascais on a day trips from Lisbon which I would recommend. All 3 cities are lovely to navigate by foot but it is walking up and down steep hills in Portuguese cities. This might be tiring for your parents and the kids and you will not be able to see all the sights in one day. If you only have 7 days, I would stick with 4 days Lisbon and 2 days Porto.

Enjoy your trip!

Hi,

My wife and I have never been to Portugal, but, I do have friends in Cascais, on the south coast east of Lisboa. Our friends send us pictures all the time and have invited us often, we just haven't gotten there yet, hope to soon. It is very beautiful (Cascais) and a chic place to visit. We're envious you will have beaten us there!

Best wishes and Happy travels.
